I don't think it is the physical, I think we gained because without the depression we allowed ourselves to be free and eat what we wanted. You guys think freedom from obesity is great. Freedom from a lifetime of severe depression, fat or thin, is like coming into the sunshine from a deep, dark storm. Guest guest
My opinion is this (after 10 years on anti depressants)...if your counselor thinks you could benefit, you out to give them a try. I haven't experienced any weight gain from them. Keep in mind, however, that you may have to try several different ones and several different dosages before you find the one that works for you. I tried 6 or 7 before I got on Paxil. It works for me. Others take Zoloft, welbutrin, etc. Every one does not work the same for every person. What is your opinion on them? What kind? I am afraid of weight gain... facing reconstructive surgery in August and I had a terrible round of depression the first 5 weeks after my lower body lift in January... any suggestions... any thing you can share will be appreciated. Guest guest
Bev, I think it would be worth a try. I have been on and off antidepressants for 15 years now. Some antidepressants can make you gain weight. I gained about 75 to 100 lbs after starting Prozac and another 75 to 100 lbs after starting serzone. I have actually started loosing weight again after starting Wellbutrin. I believe Jac mentioned that not all meds work the same on all people. A prime example of this is that most people loose weight on Prozc. I was that less then 1% that actually gained weight on it. So it may take a little experimenting. Anti-depressants have been a life saver (literally) for me. It certainly can't hurt to try. Lori Owen - Denton, Texas SRVG 7/16/01 Dr. Ritter/Dr. Bryce 479/335/??? Guest guest
Oh no, have I found a twin or what? It truly is great to come out from underneath that big black cloud that followed me for years. Guest guest
Bev, I have suffered and been treated for depression for many years, some of which I was not obese. I have always felt that baby weight gain 2x's and Zoloft were the major causes of my obesity. For years zoloft was not thought to contribute to weight gain. I talked to my doc's many times about it. It was helping very well with the depression though. So I continued. I was in counseling for weight issues during that time also. I finally switched to Wellbutrin not long before my surgery. So, I have no proof that the zoloft really contributed to the gain. Of course, we all know once the weight is on, it is very hard to lose. I also took meds for arthritis and was unable to exercise so that also contributed. I would highly recommend antidepressants. It may take a few tries and some changes in dosage to find the right mix. They have made a big difference in my life even w/ the weight gain. Good Luck.
