Guest guest
Hi Hilary I had probably about the same size opening as you at 11 weeks (same upper and lower but with palatal split). A couple of weeks ago I saw my surgeon for a check up (I am 8 months on now) and I had managed to get it up to 30mm. It stills needs to be more - 35 is what he told me to aim for and I do this with stretching exercises using tongue depressors. I believe several people in this group have been given this to do. My problem seems to be onesided and the exercises are pretty sore to do but they do get results (very slowly in my case and I think that is because I don't do them as regularly as I should!) I got a bit scared at one point because my bottom teeth are not rock solid and I was worried about the leverage on them with the depressors. My ortho says the instability is normal with wearing retainers and it is not as if they are wobbling uncontrollably, just got a very slight give to them. I just always make sure my bottom retainer is in when I do the exercise. How about altered sensation? Do you have that. Although not totally numb my bottom lip and chin fields totally wierd, cold feelings running through and stiffness. I can feel touch, hot and cold takes a while to get through. My palate behind my front teeth also feels wierd. I also found sideways movement hard but this has gradually improved. I do notice some odd clunking sensations every now and then on both sides of the jaw. You ought to double check with your surgeon before attempting any other exercises. They all seem to have different ideas. I saw my consultant's surgical registrar once and he told me to do the tongue depressor exercise in sets of 7 for 7 seconds each, 7 times a day. That was downright impossible unless I marooned myself at home all day! Sue (UK
Guest guest
Hi Sue Thanks for your reply, it is always reassuring to find someone who's recovery is similar to your own so you dont feel left behind! Anyway, yes I do have altered sensation in my chin - exactly as you describe. If something hot or cold touches my lower lip I seem to feel it in my whole chin (most strange) and I have tingling and pins and needles in it too. I will ask my Dr about the tongue depressor excercises. Hilary > > Hi Hilary > > I had probably about the same size opening as you at 11 weeks (same > upper and lower but with palatal split). Guest guest
Hi! I have to do side to side exercises for 3 minutes 3 times a day and they work. I have an interesting sensation in my chin too- exactly like you describe. Im getting sick of it but I guess there is nothing I can do. Good luck Rebekah In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " hilaryusa2001 " <hilaryusa2001@y...> wrote: > > Hi Sue > > Thanks for your reply, it is always reassuring to find someone who's > recovery is similar to your own so you dont feel left behind! > > Anyway, yes I do have altered sensation in my chin - exactly as you > describe.
