Guest guest
I had lower jaw surgery on January 5th, I had my jaw pushed back about 10mm. I didn't vomit because they had a NG tube in me until the morning after. My breathing problems were minimal and were aggravated by the NG tube down my throat, they gave me nasal spray to help my nose when it got stuffed up. The pain wasn't too bad because they were giving me morphine and at home I was on liquid vicodin which I only used for 3 days, after that it gave me nausea. I wouldn't worry too much. If you have anymore questions, feel free to email me. I hope this helped! Jo
Guest guest
Hello, What does your surgery entail-will they move your jaw forward or back and how far? I had lower jaw surgery 10/14/04 (jaw was moved forward) and I didn' experience any " pain " ...... at least that isn't the word I would use........I was uncomfortable and I wanted to be " back to normal " shortly after the procedure but I wouldn't call it pain. The double edged sword regarding this surgery is that by nature the surgery usually damages the nerve that runs through your jaw which in turn makes the area around the lower jaw go numb (lip/chin even the gum area). So the pain you normally would feel agter a major surgery is diminished due to the nature of the procedure. The down side is that the numbness could stay for a while and sometimes the feeling may not come back at all. I hope I am not scaring you but I am sure your oral surgeon has already gone over the procedure and the risks. I have gotten back about 85-90 percent of my feeling back in my lower lip/chin and jaw area. I was not wired shut but I was VERY sick from the anesthetic they used but if you let the nurses know they will give you meds to counteract the sick feeling. I did not need to vomit. I am at the point right now that I feel like I am starting to get back to " normal " and hoping my ortho will say the magic words I have been waiting to hear for 2 years...........Lets get those braces out of your mouth you are DONE Try to calm yourself, be as prepared as you possibly can and know that this procedure takes a while to heal from. It is all worth it. Even though my bite isn't perfect I am extremely happy with my surgery results so far.........Good luck melissadouthwright wrote: Hi, I'm new to this forum but I'm having lower jaw surgery in 6 weeks and I'm scared out of my freakin' mind that it's going to hurt a lot. I think I have a pretty high threshold for pain, but I fear not being able to breathe in the recovery room and vomiting and having my jaw wired shut (well I guess technically they use little tiny wires). Has anyone on here had lower jaw (only) surgery? And if so, how did it go for you?? ---------------------------------
Guest guest
Hi, thanks for the advice its nice to hear , for me they want to move my upper in and the back up a bit and as for the lower it is they want to make my chin more prenounced to be prefect. I guess the thought of not having the feeling ever come back seems bad becaue the whole reason for doing it is to improve yourself not trade one thing for another but It does help hearing peoples experiences and you cant get enough info and stuff so thanks a lot, im glad things have gone well for you and hope that if i decide to do it i have the same results thanks again and take care Rick --- Carol Twilleager wrote: > Hello, > > What does your surgery entail-will they > move your jaw forward or back and how far? > > I had lower jaw surgery 10/14/04 (jaw was moved > forward) and I didn' experience any " pain " ...... at > least that isn't the word I would use........I was > uncomfortable and I wanted to be " back to normal " > shortly after the procedure but I wouldn't call it > pain. Guest guest
The surgery I'm having is to have my lower jaw moved forward. I had a consultation with the oral surgeon, but it was more than a year ago. I go to see him again 3 weeks before the surgery and I have so many questions to ask him (I hope I remember everything). He told me there was a risk of numbness in the lip and and chin area. I'm not really concerned about that, I'm too worried about other things, lol. I have allergies and am often stuffed up so I'm mostly just hoping I can breathe afterwards.
Guest guest
Make a list of your questions now! I always took a list in when I went to the surgeon pre/post-op, and same with my ortho. That way I wasn't likely to forget anything. They answered every single question, nothing was silly to them. > > The surgery I'm having is to have my lower jaw moved forward. Guest guest
I actually sent my surgeon my questions in advance, and he answered just about every one of them in his presentation to me, without my having to ask. As for breathing after surgery: I had lower advancement, too. I was really worried about congestion and breathing, as well, because I, too, have considerable allergy troubles. It may reassure you to find that you're unlikely to have those problems, far as I know. It's mostly the folks who have work on the upper jaw who have that. Do you know whether you're to be wired or banded? That could make a difference, too -- I was neither, although I did have a splint wired into the upper brace. I didn't realize that, and I think my surgeon must have thought me nuts when I asked him whether I could take something for the allergies and blood pressure problems, post op. He did give me liquid antibiotics and Lortab at first, but the reason for that was he knew that I would have a sore throat from the intubation and he didn't want me to have to swallow big pills. (Lovely, considerate man, really!) C. > > > > > The surgery I'm having is to have my lower jaw moved forward. I > had > > a consultation with the oral surgeon, but it was more than a year > > ago.
