Guest guest
Hi all, I'm new to this site and I'm scheduled to have my braces on in 2 weeks then lower jaw advancement in 10 months. I am from Western Australia and I was wondering if anyone else on this site has had this done in Perth and what surgeon did they go to? Also I've been refered to a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgoen not an OC - does anyone know any disadvantages/advantages to not seeing a surgeon who just does one type of op? Also how long do the bands usually stay on for post op? Has anyone come across some good sites or books? (I was a sucker for buying Sach Silva's book and it was a lot of crock! Did anyone have any probs yawning, coughing etc with bands/wires? What were most people scared of before the surgery and what were the most probs people had after the surgery? Scared! Guest guest
Hi Lorraine, I am from Canada so unfortunately do not know any surgeons in Perth. I did live in Melbourne for a year though :0) How are the wildfires? I would ask your Ortho who they can recommend and also get some second opinions - no harm in that. Ask how many of your type of surgeries the surgeon has performed. Mine had done approx. 6,000 upper and lower (but that is very high). I am almost 2 weeks post op and I still have my splint and elastics. I prob have to wear them for at least another week and then prob just at nightime. One guy who had surgery the same day as me had them off during the day by day 10 so everyone is different. I haven't had any problems yawning or coughing. I do try and stifle my yawns a wee bit. I was scared about the unknown mainly. It is natural to be nervous. I think it's important you have someone with you in the hospital when you come out of recovery for support and that you try and go in with a very positive attitude! It's going to be a great change! Don't doubt the decision you made and try and stay healthy and active leading up the surgery, this will help with your recovery. Honestly (I had upper and lower) the surgery and recovery hasn't been anywhere near as bad as I had thought - but everyone is different. This site actually scared me a lot, and my surgeon had a look at it and it scared him too! All the things that have gone wrong and such, but don't base your decision on that. I am sure most people will tell you they are happy with going through with it all. Can't say I had too many problems after surgery. Just remember the first few days are the worst and it's all uphill from there! Good luck!
