I still have a ridge of scar tissue inside my mouth, on the right side,

low. My mouth became messy early in my childhood. I inherited my

father's recessive lower jaw and pointy upper arch. I lost the six-year

molar not long after it came in (due to terrible decay, in procedures

that made me terrified of dentists for many years. This was back in the

dark ages, before the tools and techniques were improved, and I still

remember the agony of a multihour appointment of drilling with an old-

fashioned slow burr that heated up so that we had to wait for it to

cool down. It was dreadful.) and the 12-year molar moved into that

spot. Then I grew a really quirky wisdom tooth, that was badly rotated

and stuck out into my right cheek. My orthodontist rotated it back

toward a normal arch, and swears that it's where it's supposed to be.

But it had an extra cusp. And that was what was reaching out and

chomping down on the scar tissue. I actually went back to my surgeon

for him to do something called a " Z-plasty " on the scar tissue, but he

looked again and decided that would do more harm than help.

So he suggested to my regular dentist that he grind off the extra cusp.

That meant another set of study models (which let me see how nice and

straight my teeth were, and how good the bite is!) and another session

with my regular dentist. Since then I have had no trouble.

But while the scar tissue was in the path of the bite, it stayed

irritated the whole time. It was an unusual (i hope) situation,

complicated by my previously screwy bite.

Cammie,

Your description of what happened with your poor childhood teeth....

NOW that sounds barbarian!!!! Oh my goodness... I've had my dentist

induced discomforts, pain, and misery, but nothing to compare to

that. Sounds like a fun time with the scar tissue.... I'm glad it

bothers you NO LONGER!! You deserve that at least!

Katja :)

And no, that doesn't sound like what I'm experiencing. I have no idea

what is going on with my mouth but it's been miserable the past

couple of days... always over a weekend, ya know?? I'm planning to

inquire tomorrow....
