Guest guest
Hello, I started the SCD diet a couple of days ago, and unfortunately my symptoms have gotten worse. I have gone from 2-3 bowel movements per day (with some formation and also a very small amount of blood), to complete diarrhea, no formation, with significantly more blood/mucus than before, currently about 4-5 BMs per day. I have faithfully followed the " Introductory Diet " and have not deviated (broiled hamburger patties, broiled chicken, chicken soup (used recipe in book), ripe banana, Welch's grape juice/water mix. I tried making the " cheesecake " but it didn't turn out very good. I'm just wondering if this is normal when starting the diet, or should I discontinue for awhile and try again when symptoms are better (Note: I am also on 30 mg prednisone (tapering down) and Remicade -- but I would like to NOT be!). Thank you, Chris

Hi It certainly can be normal to experience some fluctuation in symptoms in starting the SCD. Essentially, the diet is detabilizing your gut ecology, shaking things up, so there are bound to be changes, some good, some bad in the short term. Were you eating much honey? Much yogurt? Some people react badly, when starting the diet, to eating yogurt freely - and in those cases, it is better to start with a teaspoon and work your way up slowly. Also, if you are having increased mucous, this could be from die off or from too much dairy. Also, if you were eating pureed carrots - some people react badly to too many carrots. You'll have to work out which food is likely making you react. You don't say what your illness is, btw. Good luck with improving, Mara
