Amy,

The only bivalve helmet I know if is the STARlight helmet from Orthomerica. Here is a link on their website: http://www.orthomerica.com/products/cranial/starlightbivalve.htm Is that what his looks like? I am no expert, but from what I can see, it looks like it's a passive helmet not an active band. There is a difference between helmet and band in the sense that a helmet covers the entire head as opposed to a band which has a wider opening at the top. The STARlight bivalve looks like a helmet to me. The DOC band is a band.

16mm sounds pretty severe to me and worth treating.

I also learned from this board that passive helmets take a little longer to work and progress varies. Some have had great successes. For others like me, it was a total fiasco. Maysa was in a passive helmet from Eastern Cranial Affiliates for 3.5 months and despite considereable growth, her brachy and plagio never got better. We switched her then to an active band (the DOC band) and started seeing results right away.

If I were you, I would try to find out who makes your son's helmet and also post you location. Maybe someone on this board who is from the area will be able to better answer your questions.

Leila,

Maysa, 15 months, 4 weeks left in DOC band 2

My son (6 1/2 months) was just diagnosed with plagio and we took him to get his casting yesterday for his helmet. Apparently his asymmetry is 16mm, but I don't know how that translates to the percentages you all talk about, I guess it's considered fairly severe. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the condition, the treatment, etc. All this while trying to be a full time working mother and feeling guilty that I didn't realize how severe the flatness was sooner. He gets the helmet next week, but I don't really understand the different types of "helmets," "bands," etc. I asked and his is a bi-valuve helmet. Can anyone tell me anything about this type and how it works versus the band or other methods?I really appreciate any info. Thanks!!Amy
