Depending on your insurance, Yes- go to your primary care physician for

a referral. It will likely make your battle for coverage a lot easier

in the long run. maybe ask your ortho for a few different names of

surgeons and then cross-reference it with the list of network doctors

your PCP can refer.

Hello,

I have Dental insurance with BCBS which paid a small portion for my

braces. When I consulted with my orthodontist before getting braces

he mentioned my elongated jaw on one side. He asked if I ever had

pain or popping. I said yes as a matter of fact my jaw recently

started pooping occasionally while eating hard things like croutons.

That was that. I had TMJ on my chart. He contacted the OS he always

works with. I gave them my medical insurance info. and they wrote

and called BCBS. The procedure was immediately preapproved for upper

and lower which is a lot more pricey than just lower. The surgery is

completely covered.

Are you really taken with that surgeon? Or is there a reason why he

must be the one?

My surgeon did all the filing for approval from the insurance. He and

his staff were wonderful, and they got approval on the first

application for precertification, plus a renewal when the first one

expired.

This is an important part of the equation, and your surgeon is your

best ally in dealing with the insurance company -- if he's willing to

help.

I'm just wondering whether there might be another, equally qualified

surgeon you might like as much, who would be more, um, helpful...
