Guest guest
Not to discount your choices here but the stupidest thing I did recently was eat way to many sugar free peanut butter cups. Talk about dumping. The thing is I knew that this was a side effect of eating the sugar free stuff. I have decided that if I want the peanut butter cups that bad I'll get the real ones. There have already been some good suggestions. I have started keeping stuff like cashews, string cheese, and yogurt. These usually satisfy my crunching desire as well as my sweet tooth. I already did the STUPID choice of Twix and Starburst It is not off topic at all. This is what we deal with after surgery......life without the extra food. It is not easy to find other coping mechanisms when the food reaction is so second nature to us. Just throw away the stick you are using to beat on yourself and get back to treating your self well. To bring you comfort....talk to a friend...take a walk....pray...(I noticed your screen name) Acknowledge your feelings and then get on with life. ...and then save this email so that you can send it to me when I am in a tough spot! Best of luck with your journey. O'Connell Haverhill Ma Open RNY 2/7/02 Pre op weight:248 Now:
Guest guest
> Failing that, for crying out loud, eat some junk if it really does make > you feel better. We had this surgery to be NORMAL, not perfect, and most > people do sometimes eat junk, many of them when life serves up evil > surprises. I think we tend to forget this, since as MO people we're so used to thinking of our using food-as-soothing-medication as a really pathological act--and it certainly is, when taken to the excess that most of us did. But " normal " people *do* act this way on occasion! I was reading a light mystery novel not long ago with a female main character. Sorry, don't remember the title or author. The main character wasn't heavy, nor was the author, but at one point in the book the main character had a totally frustrating meeting in which her new immediate boss royally screwed her in front of *his* boss. The character drove home completely upset, angry, and frustrated, and the author had her buying a box of chocolates and eating the whole thing on the long car ride home. Just a tiny bit of background color in the book, but it really struck me at the time; normal people do this too! The problem is that, for many of us, it may (or maybe inevitably) start the slippery slope that's so hard to get out of. It's like the difference between a non-alcoholic having a few drinks after an upsetting experience and an alcoholic doing the same thing, and ending up losing sobriety for a long time. I guess we each just have to decide how addictive we are and whether it can be an occasional response or something we have to stay away from completely. The answer may well vary for us depending on where we are in our relationship with food at the moment. Hopefully we'll know in our heart of hearts whether eating the junk can be temporary, or the start of a disaster. Celia
