Don't be sorry.

You're only telling what happened to you. That's important for folks

going in, to know.

I am the one who's sorry, that you had such pain.

I didn't have hooks, and consider myself fortunate. Some folks have

them throughout ortho treatment; others get them a day or two

before; others get them a month, or a week before. I don't

understand the differences. But it's good to know what can happen.

Hope you're feeling better now! Mainly!

Dave,

did you have the hooks on in addition to the braces or just the hooks?

I seem to remember you mentioning that you only had the hooks but i

might be completely wrong. I ask because I was thinking that perhaps

the hooks might have been killing you so much because your mouth was

not used to having metal sticking into it. I know that the first 3

months i had braces on the inside of my mouth was constantly swollen

and bleeding. Now it's developed a certain scar tissue barrier and i am

hoping that will protect me somewhat from the hooks, but like i said, i

may be totally wrong. And thanks for being so upfront and honest. I

prefer to expect the worse than expect no pain and suddenly be shocked

that it hurts.

I only had the hooks. I never had braces. Your probably correct about

those with braces having an easier time.

My hooks were used for positioning of elastics post-op, to keep my

jaws positioned correctly in relation to each other (and to keep me

from moving them around very much). I was too busy sleeping during

the surgery to ask what my surgeon used them for.

They were not soldered in place, though, they were slid along my

archwire (in between brackets) by my ortho, and crimped into place.

My surgeon also added some nasty twisted wire hooks during the

surgery for more accurate positioning - nasty because they did

irritate the inside of my mouth and lips.

I would also be interested in the hooks. My OD said i am nearly

ready for surgery, well my bottom teeth are and it depends if my top

teeth are where they want them in 7 wks time. I have noticed some

hook/catches like things that are attached to my brace covering the

last 3 teeth from the back on my lower teeth on each side. I think

although can't get a good enough look that these may also be on the

top teeth too. I have two tiny 2mm ones with a ball on top on only

two of my top teeth, either side of my buck teeth. Does this sound

like i have my surgical hooks?!!

That's awesome, but now I'm behind... behind in school, because I

couldn't stop reading my e-mails, behind in e-mails, because I

realized I needed to get my butt in gear at school.... LOL

sent in to insurance. *GASP* I am to have a Leforte 2-piece, on an

OUTPATIENT basis. Is this normal? Is this right? Not only that,

he informed them that my recovery period would be one week. Um,

somehow I'm not so comfortable with that. Now, mind you, I have

seen him for a total of ONCE, for maybe 15 minutes. All his records

came straight from my OD's office so I wouldn't have to waste time

or money getting them done again. God love my OD, he went ahead

with braces the following week on good faith of my report back to

him, because as of yesterday - one MONTH later - he still has not

heard hide nor hair from my OS. I go back to my OD Monday for my

first adjustment and rubber bands, and my teeth STILL hurt from day

1. I can't believe how much things have moved already, though! My

front teeth have been loose and very sore since last weekend, when

my dog bashed me in the face with his big head! I can't go back to

it's not another dog's head, it could be a horse's or a cow's!

describe them to me, or better yet, post a picture of said surgery

hooks? The reason I ask is I have hooks on pretty much ALL of my

brackets except incisors, and those have funky things on the

inside. I don't know if my OD went ahead and put hooks on already,

or if those are just " little " ones for the rubber bands. I have

already managed to impale myself numerous times on these little

guys - heaven help me if I have to get anything larger!

information my OS has provided. He wasn't the first choice of my

OD, but he's the only one that has experience with and can accept my

I already have a laundry list of questions for the next time I see

him, which he said isn't until my teeth are all completely

straight!

I swear I saw in one of the photo albums a photo of someone with

hooks on but now I can't remember where. I'll sift through the photos

more later on this week and see if I can dig something up for all of

us pre-oppers to ooogle at.
