How common is it for the surgery not to work? I know there is a chance

of this, but I don't want to go through all of this and have to do it

again.

also, does anyone regret having the surgery?

Honestly I don't know the statistics, but I can say that I do not

regret my surgery. I had upper and genio (plus sinus stuff) in

Aug '04 and while I now need to get my screws and plates taken out,

minor bummer, (april '05)...I still have NO regrets on having the

surgery.

It IS an undertaking for sure, but considering surgically what they

actually " do " to correct bites and better your health, it really

wasn't that bad. Sure, there are moments that seem to last forever, I

won't lie, but mostly if you can go with the flow and get a good

eating system into place you will get through it just fine.

I think the most impt thing aside from being patient and " ready " for

it personally...is to be 100% sure you trust your OS, OR and

hospital...if you feel confidence there...GO FOR IT!

I feel better every day...no more sinus headaches, no more painful

bite daily, no more shifting of my teeth, no more feeling

uncomfortable with my profile...all of these things are better now.

And while I didn't do this for image and still think I look just like

me...I have had life-long friends just stare at me and say, things

like, wow, I wouldn't notice it was you if we walked by each other on

the street-it's incredible...or, one of my favorites, -while staring

intensly at me--just keep talking, I am trying to figure this all

out! it's you, I know but just keep talking, Im trying to pu tit all

together! --- She had me laughing aloud!

Bottom line, if it helps your health...physically...do it...

if it helps your health mentally and it's " important " to you...do

it...

do it if it feels best for YOU.

(You can get through it with determination and these sites!!:)

My judgment is that it's not common at all. We see more such

problems as the site has grown to include more people, I think. And

there's been much conversation here about the reasons --- more

people, less likelihood of satisfied customers continuing to post,

etc., etc.

Of course you don't want to go through all this and wind up with

remaining problems -- what sane person would!?!

I do not regret having the surgery. A few folks do. There are a

fraction who have a great deal of pain, during and after the

surgery. There are more folks who have enduring numbness, which can

be especially punishing to people whose joy in life is greatly

enriched by playing musical instruments, and who find their ability

impaired, post-op, by the numbness.

These things are unusual, but that doesn't help if they happen to

you.

Learn as much as you can, before you decide. Weigh the risks and the

benefits, and then take your best shot.

For me, the choice was to lose my teeth, which were being destroyed

by my bite, or have a small lower surgical advancement (and 20

months of braces at age 56-57). The treatment did wonders, and I

have never regretted a moment. I did, however, have a wonderful

surgeon and ortho, an easy recovery and no bad after-effects. That

is not true for everyone.
