Guest guest
The first book I ever got was "the ibd remission diet" by Jini Patel . I paid $25.00 for it and after reading through a little of it I noticed it was more advertisement for products she sells and gets a cut of the profits from than it was "i'm here to help". After looking deeper and finding that she charges $1,000.00 for an E-MAIL consult it became quite clear what all the motivation was behind the book and the products she offers. It's funny how you can't get any info on her probiotic enema or most of the other things she tell you to use unless you buy the book or pay some online fee. That's the short version of all the things I find wrong with her books/programs.It may help some people, but it's a total waste of time and money in my opinion. -UC - 1+ yearsSCD - 8 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 12 pills a day Prednisone 40mg entocort With vit E mixed inBack to intro/stage 1 for now.To: BTVC-SCD From: idkwia@...Date: Sun, 28 Mar 2010 20:33:21 +0000Subject: Anyone tried Jini Patel-'s Protocols or Absorb Plus I am thinking of trying Jini Patel-'s protocol including the elemental diet using her Absorb Plus. Guest guest
I tried this too before SCD. I have stated before that I bought a bunch of different diet books before settling on SCD. SCD may have been a little harder to do at first, but it made the most sense to me. To follow Jini Patel's program you have to purchase and use her supplements. (Note that nobody profits from SCD, and the advice... from all of us.. is also a no profit situation.) I tried absorb plus when I was basically not tolerating much of anything at all. I thought it would be a good source of nutrition. Not only did it contain maltodextrin, but a single serving also had a huge load of carbs. For me, it made the D worse. I used it for 2 days and when it increased the D for me, I stopped. Shortly after that I started SCD. PJ > > > The first book I ever got was " the ibd remission diet " by Jini Patel . Guest guest
Yes, and this question comes up from time to time. I think, from my perspective, the larger question is can you combine the various diets around, and after extensive reading, I concluded that you can't. Either the food list or the supplements are incompatible with SCD. I think some people would want to examine all options. I know I wanted to read everything. After reading many books, SCD was the only program that really made sense, and one of the few that nobody stands to profit from. The other aspect is the sheer loneliness and fear of dealing with GI issues. Some programs offer advice and support for a fee. This board has been the best support ever, and with no charge. I am so grateful for the help here, and hope to pass on the favor. I hope it is reassuring to some people starting SCD to know that some of us have read the alternatives- even if it is not appropriate to discuss them here, and chose SCD. The collective information here is massive and comes from people who are always reading and searching. There are no other short cuts, and if there were, you would read about it here. My best recommendation is to save your time and money, and stick to SCD. PJ > >I am thinking of trying Jini Patel-'s > >protocol including the elemental diet using her > >Absorb Plus. Guest guest
I'm so grateful for your time. I can understand someone feeling the need to pay for the chance to discuss alternatives and possibilities about diets and supplements. My own doctor spent very little time with me and dismissed diet from the get-go. I do recall feeling completely out on a limb and isolated until I found this board. The best way I can thank you and everyone else here is to " pay it forward " and help others along the way as well. PJ > >I think some people would want to examine all > >options. I have read JP's book. She stated in her book that she came up with her program as an alternative to SCD, but she liked SCD and wanted similar results. However, hers requires her supplements and I can not vouch that her program has a similar success rate even though she claims it worked for her. I suspect SCD would have given her good results if she had chosen to stick with it. Everyone here is free to make their own choices, and I sincerely hope everyone recovers. But as Marilyn says, this is an SCD board, and anyone wanting more info on JP's program should look at her board PJ > > That bio could almost be mine except I was taking 21 pills per day without > family connections or money. Guest guest
Hi Steve, For starters I haven't tried Absorb Plus, but have read JPT's book, Listen to Your Gut. I'll just shed my insight into this. Absorb Plus' aim is to mimic the elemental diet, using 'natural' ingredients. From my understanding of BTVC (see chap. 1 in particular), is that SCD is meant through diet, to similarly provide energy/nutrients to us as a synthetic elemental diet would (both rely on monosaccharides). Considering this, I think it would be safe to say that Absorb Plus, SCD and elemental diets to some extent are aiming for something similar. So then if they're supposed to do the same thing on one level and you're not achieving results with SCD, the question becomes what's the point? Perhaps the elemental diet or anything that aims to reproduce its results won't work for your condition. However, if your predominant issues are nausea and specifically stomach discomfort, perhaps the Absorb Plus would be a more ideal option for you than SCD, considering that it is said to be " predigested " (and SCD may have some things that are difficult on the stomach like meat or raw veggies or nuts, especially if there's an issue with low stomach acid). Since you haven't been seeing any results with SCD after 3.5 months and if you have the extra cash (with shipping, it apparently can be quite costly to rely on Absorb Plus), maybe it wouldn't hurt to give it a go. Sorry that I can't give you any direct experience with the product, but I do sympathize with your quest to heal/help yourself. However, I am turned off by JPT's exorbitant cost for consultation... I hope you find what works for you, whether you continue to follow SCD or not. Meli > > Thanks to all of you who have answered here, I am very grateful. > The reason I asked my question here is because I have learned to trust the opinions of people here and I also know that a number of you will have at least some dealings with Jini Patel-. > At the same time, like all of you, I am desperate to get better and this board is surely mostly about people who want to get better. > Jini charges $855 dollars for an email consultation and that is indeed a lot of money and that is also a reason for me wanting to get other people's opinions. > It is fair to say that Jini Patel- is a supporter of SCD I believe. I have seen at least one post from her on the SCD boards. She did try SCD and it helped her but not enough. > It is certainly not my intention to hijack this SCD board on behalf of Jini Patel-Thomson, far from it in fact. However I would suggest that it is only right that we discuss other protocols here; after all if someone really did find a cure for all of our problems so that we could all eat what we want then we would want to know about it. > Ultimately I have to make my own decision. I have been on SCD for 3.5mths but as yet no improvement but I don't have UC or Chron's. > Thank you all for your input and I would welcome input from others. > > I will close by copying part of a reply from the UK SCD which is a testimonial about Jini Patel- herself. > > http://jptwellnesscircle.s3.amazonaws.com/l2yg/interviewjini.mp3 - this tells the remarkable story of how Jini came to become a researcher & a pioneering fount of knowledge on all issues related to intestinal ill-health and damage. It takes the form of a conversation explaining how she healed herself after literally beign brought to the suicidal brink aged 17 with one of the most severe cases of Crohn's Disease where for the first three years after being diagnosed, because of her family’s medical connections, she had accesss into the top gastroenterologist in Canada †" including one GI in charge of a national research team on Crohn’s and colitis but despite the crème de la crème orthodox care she describes herself as sick as a dog, getting worse and worse with every passing month. After three years and on 13 pills a day, she was told her widespread Crohn’s, was affecting her small intestine and large intestine, possibly spread to the stomach and she was told she’d probably have to spend the rest of her life in and out of the hospital, wldn’t be able to have children, or hold down a job. At her nadir she was hemorrhaging and filling about four toilet bowls full of blood a day, with mouth ulcers covering her mouth, down her esophagus, unable to eat, and in continual pain. After a big mental shift towards embracing health and healing, she first began with the SCD diet which but helped but only to a degree and from then on she has contined to refine and improve and research, research, research first healing hersel entirely and helping legion clients in the intervening 2 decades… > > Steve > SCD - 3.5mths > Constant stomach discomfort and nausea 18mths > Mirtazapine 23.5mg >
