Here are the Answer to the Q we asked from Dr. P about the pain in

Oshri's feet.

I don't really know what to do now. I think we will try to continue

with the shoes for as long as we can as planed, meaning until age 4.

Oshri rarely complains that his feet hurt during naptime with the

shoes, so I know we have to continue with this.

I must say that I'm peaty existed from this and I find my self cry

at night while giving the little feet a massage…

Thanks

Pain in the feet as your child has at night is very rare.

Apparently the child rests well when the brace is removed. Since he

is already 2 1/2 years old you could try removing the brace for a

few weeks. Oftentimes there is no relapse at this age. If your

doctor sees any sign of a relapse after a month or so, you may have

to go back to the brace.

Dear Dr. Ponseti,

You have helped us previously with valuable advice and information,

and we are more than grateful for you kind support. Now we are

writing again to ask your advice re. the clubfeet condition of our

son. He is 2.4 years old, bilateral clubfoot, and treated since

birth in the Ponseti method. Since age 3 months he wears the DB

brace, currently for 10 hours a day (when he sleeps). In the last

three months, he persistently reports pains in his feet. His

language skills are very developed, and we have a good reason to

believe that he does not confuse the feet pain with other feelings.

Sometimes he wakes up during night and complains about pain, and

then we remove the DB.

During the last three months we changed his Markell shoes to a larger

size, changed the length of the DB bar back and forth in order to

find the " optimal " length, and bought him new day/walking shoes. In

addition, we massage his feet every night for 10 minutes.

We are not sure how relevant is this, but our son also has hyper-

flexibility of muscles.

Last week he was examined by his orthopedist doctor (Dr. Ron Lamdan,

from the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel) , who says that the

correction of his clubfeet is perfect. The doctor saw his DB bar

and his Markell shoes, and said that everything is in the right size

and measure. The doctor also said that he cannot think of any cause

for the pain of our child.

Our questions are: Is there any reason to suspect that these pains

might indicate a relapse of the clubfoot? Is there anything we

should do right now?

Thank you in advance, "

Idit,

I'm so sorry you are having this trouble and that don't have a clear

answer.

Dr. Ponseti told me one time that pain is NOT an indicator of the

beginning of a relapse, and the fact that Oshri's doctor thinks his

foot is fine should be a good indication too that isn't the problem.

It seems you've tried just about everything else it might be.. with

changes to the shoes and the bar length. Has Oshri been complaining

regularly, and persistently, all this time? Is it both feet? where

does he say, exactly, on his foot that it hurts? You said he doesn't

complain during naptime; is it only at night, then? What about during

the day, when he's walking around?

Hopefully this is something related to maybe a growth spurt and will

go away with time. I wish I had more to suggest..

take care,

and Claire

It's not always easy to get a child to cooperate with what you want but there

are excercises to help cure flat feet. Mainly (that i'm aware of) anything

along the lines of picking up objects with his toes. I used this to some

degree with when he was about 18 months, using KIX cereal, putting it

between his toes and he had to wiggle them out (then he'd eat them).

I cured my own extremely flat feet picking up small pebbles, marbles, etc. as it

builds up the arch support muscles.

I'm not sure what the deal with is though. Dr. Dietz (works with Dr.

Ponseti) says has a good arch, yet he walks his shoes over really bad.
