Re: Surgical Hooks

my surgical hooks don't cut into me at all. they are tiny little

vertical metal posts perpendicular to the arch wire. the rubberbands

are hooked onto them to hold them in place. does this explanation make

sense? they are tiny and dont really bother me at all, they are just

used to rubberband me shut. i'm not sure how long they are on after

surgery, i'm only at 3 1/2 weeks post op. my splint comes off thursday

and they change my arch wire, so i'll find out then- but i'm sure

people farther along than me will be able to tell you

They are not too bad. When the tech at my OD's office first put mine

on I thought I would not be able to live with them but then my OD

bent them back a little and I really did not notice that they were

there (until I looked in the mirror of course).

My OS actually said that mine could be removed when I saw him at my 3

week post-op visit but my OD advised that I probably would not be

able open my mouth wide enough or hold open long enough for him to

take them off at that time. I had them removed at my first post-op

OD visit 6 weeks after the surgery.

Does everyone have to have these? Nobody at the Ortho's ever said

anything about hooks.

I didn't have anything different from the ordinary hooks I used for

the elastics -- except for post op. My jaw started hurting a bit, so

my surgeon wired in a couple of big, twisty wire hooks for elastics

right up front (he was able to use the lower stuff I had), to support

the elastics. When I complained, he said, " Well, tell your

orthodontist to give me more lugs to work with. "

I didn't complain much, though -- I was really glad to have those

elastics, as they banished the pain within 15 minutes.

The surgical hooks my ortho put on were not painful, just more

hardware to wrap my lips around : <

My surgeon also added some twisted wire hooks during surgery because

he needed more control over placement, I think. Also, the hooks the

ortho put on didn't stay in place (they slide in between the

brackets).

The surgical hooks from the surgeon were a bit painful post-op as the

inside of my cheeks and lips were the first area to wake up from

numbness. I soon learned that talking was to be avoided as it caused

a great deal of irritation.

The ortho's hooks went on 3 weeks before surgery and stayed on for 8

weeks post-op. The surgeon's hooks went on during surgery and one

stayed for 6 weeks until it fell apart (I made a quick phonecall to

see if I needed to go back as there was nowhere to hook the elastics

as put in place by the surgeon - turns out it was ok to stop wearing

them), then the other was removed next visit to the surgeon.

You'll likely find it more work to clean up as those hooks are great

little food-trappers.
