I have a 50 cm common channel. I don't have diarrhea in my opinion. I think

when talking about the diarrhea issue, it is important to define diarrhea.

So many could have different perceptions. When my children were babies,

being a new mom I had lots of questions for my pediatrician. When it came to

bowel issues when the kids were sick, the pediatrician always said that

consistency does not define diarrhea, frequency does. As an adult I believe

urgency does too. So my definition of diarrhea is more than 4 times a day

AND urgent. With this definition in mind, I do not have diarrhea. BM are

sometime liquid, sometimes soft, sometimes formed. Sometimes twice a day.

Sometimes 4 times a day. However, I never get abdominal cramps and it is

never urgent. I would say I always have at least 30 minutes between urge and

absolute need. Often I can wait hours between urge and absolute need. I do

not have gas either. I teach high school students and never have to leave my

classroom due to bm issues.

Hope this helps!

Oh, and my weight is very, very, stable. It amazes me. I eat anything I

want (keeping in mind protein first) and my weight stays within the same 4

pound range.

The only issue I wanted to ask all of you about is the common channel length.

I did go back through archives, but still have a question. Dr. Sudan makes

the common channel 50cm. He wants to give you the best chance upfront to

lose weight; any revisions, according to him, are much more risky. He said

that his patients have not had problems with diarrhea. In reading the posts,

it seems that many post-ops have a 100 cm common channel.

Does anyone have a 50 cm? Any advice from you post-ops on this issue?

Thanks for your help!

Beverly: 50 cm is considered pretty 'extreme' by many, although I have read

that some surgeons will make the cc this length for various reasons (starting

bmi, etc.). I would read the Scoparino reports on www.duodenalswitch.com to

see what many post-ops came up against having such a 'short' common channel.

I'm sure there are some people on the list with 50-80 cm (under 100) and they

are compliant and living rich, full lives.

I would just compare the reports and read more about the benefits (and

potential risks) of having a shorter common channel.

Mine is 65cm. I do have periods of diahrea but nothing severe. I can

usually trace it to something I ate that might instigate it. I don't think

I've had anything worse than the next person although I'm sure its even MORE

important to get your protein in and your supplements since we mal absorb

more.
