Therefore you have already lost 70% of your excess weight in only 7 months! That is actually very good. Too many people compare pounds lost instead of % excxess weight. Your starting BMI was relatively low, so you won't loose as many lbs as somebody who started with BMI > 50. But you will loose more excess weight. Given you performance to date I would expect that you will drop down to a BMI of about 25, which means an 88% of excess weight loss. This would correspond to about 140 lbs and is a very health weight for your height (5' 3 " ?). Please note that the big advantage of the BPD/DS is the lack of significant weight regain. Normally the weight regain is less than 10 lbs. The VBG is famous for hugh weight regain. Your ideal weight is 127 lbs, so trying to reach 120 lbs is probably not realistic, and could be unhealthy for you. If you want to loose more weight then weight training combined with aerobic excercise is the only healthy way. Don't try to diet you way down to 120, as you will get sick. Regarding common channel length, 125cm has been used recently by Gagner and Ren (who was your surgeon?). Typical common channel lengths are 75-100cm, with some as short as 50cm. As I recall Joy's comman channel was 225cm which is a terrible anomaly. Having a common channel length of 125cm isn't that far out of the norm. What it means is that you absorb a bit more of the fat you eat. On the other hand, you should have fewer BM problems given you slighlty increase absorption. Given you excellent progress, I think you will do very well and will not need any revisions. Please try to adjust your expectatons to a healthy level though. If you can reach 140 lbs you will be healthy as can be (BMI=25 is at the top of the normal range). You can also get plastic surgery to remove excess skin and that will take off several more pounds. I can imagine it would be more pronounced since you've been through the VGB and have gained then.... But, I don't think many people re-gain a lot of weight back with the DS. The malapsorption (which I don't think the VGB has at all) takes care of that. Yes, your malapsorption will be 'less' at 125 cm than shorter, but I think you can still keep it off without extreme diets, etc. Oh, I can't wait to get to the 20's BMI and the 100's in terms of weight! I've been so impatient for the entire 8 months I've experienced! LOL I'm almost at -100 and I'm itching to get under 200.... I've been enjoying post-op life and haven't had many difficulties with eating, etc. and I'm totally amazed I am where I am now (in an XL/size 18)... I just remind myself that I keep on track, exercise, get the protein in.. and enjoy! all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt. Two things: first, at 7 months out, you should have lost approximately 50% of excess weight. You don't include your height, but I'm goign to guess you're on the shorter side since you're on the lighter side. Let's say your goal weight is 145 -- 50% of the 100 lbs you had to lose would be 50 lbs. You've lost 74 lbs. You've surpassed the 50% mark quite nicely! Second, from everything I've heard, your small intestine grows, so having one that starts out roughly 10 inches longer may not be a huge handicap. (2.54 cm = 1 inch, right?) Hang in there! alyssa

With *any* length of common channel, getting to 120 lbs would not be completely reasonable. The standard results with DS are 75-90% excess weight lost. 120 lbs would be 100% weight loss, which although occasionally attainable, may not be completely realistic. Aim for the 90% of excess weight loss, and if you get to 100%, it's all the better. You may find, though, that you're quite happy at 130 or 140. It's been so long since I've seen numbers like that that I have no idea what I'll feel like. At 5' tall, I have dreams of 110, but I'll be happy with 135 -- it'd be 100 lbs less than I am now, and that sounds damn good to me. ~alyssa
