can someone explain what a passive helmet is?thanksmissyFrom: fryedawn <fryedawn@...>Subject: Any good results with a passive helmet???Plagiocephaly Date: Sunday, March 8, 2009, 4:10 PM

My daughter got her passive helmet last Wednesday and is doing well with it. I know that active helmets are 100% a better choice however it was not an option in my area (St. Louis). I paid cash for it and it was only $1500 cash! That sounds like a great deal compared to what I've seen on here. The othonics place (O & P) is well known it my area and seem to not have any negative feedback here. I was surprised that it was a passive helmet because I don't remember that ever being talked about on here. Does any one have positive expeirences with passive helmets? I have also just posted pictures of my little one ( Rose), the picture does not show how mis-aligned her ears are though. Thanks! Dawn

Active

bands (such as the DOC band, STARband or Hanger Band) have pressure points

which " hold " the prominent areas while " redirecting " growth

in the flat areas. They are fit very close to the head in the prominent

areas and thus need to be closely monitored. The flat areas have room to

grow but not a lot and these areas are shaved out usually at each

appt. They apply a gentle pressure. Passive bands do not hold

in any area. They fit looser and totally rely on growth to round the

head. The active uses growth and the redirection from the pressure

points.

A passive helmet is usually a plastic shell (some may have foam or foam pieces

in them I think) helmet in the shape of what you want the baby's head to look

like. You put it on and basically wait for the head to grow into that shape. You

could go at least a month or more before needing to see the ortho again. I have

heard they can heat and manipulate the plastic if necessary to make minor

adjustments, but for the most part you just hope for good growth. Whereas an

active band is the kind that has a thick layer of foam that is shaved out every

week or so to force growth into the flat areas. The ortho is kind of actively

manipulating the growth of the head throughout treatment, whereas a passive

helmet is less high-maintenance, but also less popular. Not to say they don't

work at all, it's just that the majority of us have used active bands.
