Guest guest
My surgeon told me to quit smoking at least six weeks before surgery. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do that. I did get cut down to about 5 cigarettes a day. I had so much trouble with the breathing exercises after surgery that I wish I had been able to completely quit. I was lucky. My aunt didn't quit smoking before her surgery and had an asthma attack so severe that she had to stay in the hospital for two weeks. Try your hardest to quit!!!!! It's a lot safer that way. Also, after surgery, smoking (according to my surgeon) can cause ulcers. Good luck to you! in Indiana Open RNY 2/25/04 265.4/218/135 5'5 " Age 28 -- Smoking Is there anyone in this group...a smoker??? Any information on smoking and this surgery? My surgeon...like all docs wants me to quit. This probably wouldnt be as difficult as it seems to me except that I also have to lose 10% of my overweightedness as well. I am less than a month pre-op and would like some feedback from any smokers and how you dealt with it. My surgery is June 1st.
Guest guest
Donna, I am pre-op and I quit smoking on April 4th of this year. It definetely has not been easy. There have been days that I am consumed with wanting a cig., but I try and find something to do. I don't know when your surgery is, but you may want to try to stop in steps. If you smoke in your car, quit. This will eliminate at least a couple of cigs. a day. If you smoke in your home, quit. This will eliminate more than a couple of cigs. a day. Really, try to cut yourself back and make it harder for you to have one. Fortunately I have never smoked in my car or home, so those were quite easy for me. The hardest thing for me was the casinos. I live near indian reservations with casinos and I just can't play slots without a cig. in your hand. This has been the toughest for me. All in all, I was smoking at least a pack a day and I may smoke maybe 5 cigs. in one night at the casinos, other than that I haven't smoked during the week at all. My incentive to quit smoking is this surgery. There can be so many complications to this surgery, that I think I can be a part in helping from having at least one complication. I hope for you all the best. Vickie 5'01 " BMI 41 pre-op 215 6-7-04 Heavenly Scents Candle Company Vickie 523 Dickson Circle Sherman, Texas 75090 website: www.heavenlyscentstx.us e-mail: rasmith@...
