The goal is to INHALE as long as you can & as deep as you can.. you can blow all day & that <expletive> ball won't move... If you work with it consistently, it will help you recover more quickly from the effects of the anesthesia as well as reinflate the lungs, preventing postop pneumonia. Hugs, Liane >> whew! thanks! I can suck real good on that thing, but blow as hard as I might and it goes nowhere! I was beginning to think that I was in worse shape than I thought. And even when not preparing for surgery, I am usually pretty good at both sucking and blowing! (just had to make that remark!) hehehe Carole

Guest guest
Walking is super important to prevent deep vein thrombosis. The spirometer is equally helpful to help prevent both atalectsis (sp?) and pneumonia. Don't neglect either one. Guest guest
Walking is the best prevention for atelectasis and pneumonia. It requires a much greater respiratory effort than the incentive spirometer and also puts you upright where your diaphragm can have maximum movement anbd your lungs more fully inflate. Of course ambulating also helps with circulatory issues such as prevention of thrombosis. The spirometer is to help you when you are unable to walk or are walking infrequently or inadequately for respiratory safety. in Seattle > > > OH hell!!! > > > > > > I was blowing when I was supposed to be sucking? Guest guest
, Have you tried to run a search (using the search field at the top right corner of the message list) for the word breathing? I did and came up with quite a number of messages. You might find an answer there. Ray moderator
