Guest guest
Hi , That happened to us too. Initially 's heels weren't touching the bottom of her shoes and I thought the shoes were too big. I sent pictures of 's feet a couple of days after we got the P/M to Dr. Ponseti and this is what he emailed us back: Often it takes several weeks before the heel comes down all the way. This is accomplished by gradually increasing the tightness of the middle strap without causing discomfort to the baby. The pictures show the heel comes down some and I am sure it will come done further over the next week or so. And yes, her heels finally have come down all the way. I think you just have to give it time. And tighten the middle strap when you can. Best, Yuuko > > Sydney is in her P/M brace 23/7. Guest guest
Thank you for your encouraging e-mail. The middle strap has tightened more than when they fit her in Iowa. I guess we are doing it right. haha. yt94123 wrote: Hi , That happened to us too. Initially 's heels weren't touching the bottom of her shoes and I thought the shoes were too big. Guest guest
When I first put the shoes on, her foot is in the correct position. Her foot just slides up and won't slide back down. I have to unbuckle the shoes and redo them to put the heel back down. She isn't wearing socks w/ rubber. And about the toe strap. Her toe strap doesn't even touch her toes. It is too loose. I didn't think that it mattered. As far as testing her. Whenever we try to stand her up, she collapses her knees and won't stand. We are still working on it. number23 wrote: If necessary punch more holes so you can strap them tighter, especially at the toe and ankle (middle) strap. My " test " to see that they are on well is to stand the baby up and see if the heel seats in it's proper place. Also bend her knee as you apply the shoe, really pushing up on the foot, bending the knee to get a very definate round heel to seat in the back of the shoe as I apply the middle strap. I mentioned earlier I put a varnish on the tips of my straps to make them stiff. This really does help so you can hold the foot, the tongue, and the strap while threading the tip of the strap though the buckle to cinch up. Are you using gripper socks? Try using regular socks if you are so they can slip back if need be. I also have had to trim the tongue in each of our 3 pairs as it was way too huge. Just give it a little more time and the foot and shoe will mold to each other nicely is my guess. s. Brace Question Sydney is in her P/M brace 23/7. I get really worried than her heels aren't touching the bottom of the shoe. She has only had them on for about 5 days. said that it would take 10-15 days for her feet to " settle in " the shoes. When we put the shoes on her, her feet touches the bottom, then as she moves and kicks her heels pull up and the rubber won't let them slide back down. I have unbuckled them and put the heel back down and that fixes them temporarily. I am wondering if her shoes are too big. Does anyone else have experience with this? ps..I posted this in the clubfoot group, but meant for it to go here..
Guest guest
Hmmm, maybe they are indeed too-too big. Is it possible to email a photo to us and/or to about it?
Guest guest
Thank you for advice. Sydney's feet dorsiflex really well when her shoes are off. They just don't stay down in the shoe. I am worried about regression. She is seeing Dr. Ponseti, so I feel confident that she is in good hands. We are flying back to Iowa (from GA) in January for a follow-up. Dr. P said that he may do a 2nd tenotomy then. He wanted to see how she did in the brace. The problem is that her heel goes all the way down and stays there for about 1 hour, then she wiggles it up and it won't slide back down. The white rubber keeps the heel up. I can squish her heel back down bending the white rubber, but her foot won't slide down. I just wanted to see if anyone had the same problems. I am glad to hear that it is common for them to take time to " settle down. " theresazoe1 wrote: , The same thing happened to us w/ our daughter Sophie. We asked around (calling , asking on this site), and as many people have already said, we were told in some cases it can take the feet time to " sink down " . In our case Sophie's feet definitely settled in further than they were at first, over about 10 days, but her heels still were not fully planted down. I could still fit my pinkie finger under her heels. People on this website also asked whether her feet were able to be dorsiflexed 10-15 degrees above neutral, which was nearly impossible as far as we could gather. We also had a hard time standing her up so that was hard to judge. We decided to get a second opinion b/c we did not have total confidence in the doctor we'd been seeing. This time we saw someone on Ponseti's List, and he confirmed our suspicions that Sophie's feet were not corrected fully. He recasted her and she is due to have a second tenotomy next week. This may not be what is going on in your case, but I share it w/ you just as a " cautionary tale. " Sophie's heels did not touch the bottom of the shoes, as you say Sydneys do when you put them on at first, so that is a good sign. Who is your doctor--do you trust his opinion or do you suspect he might be modifying ponseti in any way? Best of Luck!! Zoe in Beaufort, SC > > Sydney is in her P/M brace 23/7. Guest guest
I spoke with Dr. Ponseti today, and we are going back to Iowa in 2 weeks. He thinks maybe the shoes are too big, He plans on giving her smaller shoes and putting a cast on her. theresazoe1 wrote: uh, yeah if you are seeing Dr. Ponseti I suppose you can trust your doctor's opinion! lol. sorry I cant be of more help, and hope you see those tootsies settle down soon!
