How long has your son been wearing the shoes and bar? My daughter was older

when she went into the FAB but it took her about 1-2 weeks to fully adjust to

it. Now it is really second nature to her. Try rolling a blanket or towel and

using that to put under his legs to try to alleviate some of the weight. Does

he cry nonstop or just fuss occasionally? What exactly is his reaction?

I have heard of the Wheaton Brace. It is an AFO/KAFO type of brace and

personally I would steer clear of it. We had a round with an AFO brace and it

was truly a nightmare for me. The FAB adjustment period paled in comparison to

the problems we had with the AFO. It is not used by Dr. Ponseti and in

general, he does not recommend the use of AFO's. Others on the list may have

had more experience with the Wheaton Brace and hopefully will be able to give

you more specific information about this.

the brown bar. He HATES it. I have been checking his feet and the

shoes are on right and he has no red marks or blisters. Is there

anything I can do to make it better for him. Also, a friend of mine

said her doctor used the Wheaton brace for her son's clubfoot. I cant

find anywhere that says thats a recommended treatment. Does anyone

have any information on the Wheaton brace? Is it something that is

used? Thanks in advance for all your help. I just feel so bad for my

son with him fussing all the time now.

Thanks again,

Jenni,

He has been on the brace for 3 days. His crying isnt ALL the time. But he'll

fuss about every 10 minutes. Before the brace he would sleep for 4 hours at a

time, now the most I can get him to go is 30 minute. I keep checking his feet

cause I feel like i must be doing something wrong for him to be so fussy, but

everything looks great. I just feel so bad for him.

Thanks for your help.

Trish,

Sorry this is a short answer, but I'm about to dash out the door.

Just saw your post -- The Wheaton brace is not recommended in the

Ponseti method. It does not hold the foot/feet in the proper outward

rotation. It does take a few days for the babies to get used to the

brace. If his foot is fully corrected, I would expect him to be

settling into the brace within a couple more days. If you are still

having a lot of problems after a week I would suggest looking at the

set up of the brace - degrees of rotation, length of the bar - and at

his correction, was his last cast set to 70 degrees of external

rotation, does he have good dorsiflexion, etc. I'm sure someone will

jump in here with more details but I just wanted to let you know that

we're here for you and we will help you sort out whatever the problem

is, if there is one, or if he is just getting adjusted to the shoes.

Hope this helps,

It's so tough I know. If his feet are doing OK maybe try to increase the time

between when you check the feet. Kelsey really got better when we were able to

get her to just the 23 hours in with 1 hour out. If we took them off a lot

then we had bigger problems. I had plenty of times in that first few weeks

where I was lucky we didn't have a fireplace because the shoes would have been

in there many times. Hopefully it will get better for you soon.

Hi Trish,

Welcome, you have found the right place for information and support!

We are glad that you have found your way here! Your little guy should

settle down over the next few days. As long as his feet are fully

corrected to 70 degrees and his brace is set up right, the fussiness

should abate soon.

You should help him learn to move his feet in unison by playing with

him in his brace. It took Grace a few days to 'get it' and now the

brace is just another part of her bedtime routine.

There is also a tips and tricks doc. in the files section you should

read, helped us a ton when we started wearing the brace.

I am sure you will get lots of other ideas from the folks on this

board, they are all great! Once again, glad you are here and please,

ask any questions you have, it's what we are all here for.

& Grace
