Guest guest
OK, totally non-medical here, so in laymen's terms... Stoma= The connection from the pouch to the intestines. When it stretches, the food empties out of the pouch very quickly, allowing you to eat more and never giving you that full feeling. Fistula= In this case, the body's attempt to normalize. The pouch and stomach are transected, but they find each other again and actually rejoin and form a sort of tunnel, allowing food to pass through. The result is pretty much the same as a staple line disruption, where the old stomach is back in business, hence the weight gain. There have also been cases of the intestines actually forming a new stomach. Amazing machine, the human body. in NJ ************************* > What is that??? Stoma? Ok how about someone enlighten me on all the terms, I know iknow them but i have such bad memory. I know just from my body that my food empties really fast out of my pouch- but i can live with it and make adjustments as far as food consumption- Just wonder what all the terms out there mean. > Tara
Guest guest
> It is my understanding that a fistula occurs when the two parts of a transected stomach come in contact with each other and a connection grows between them. *** they do not have to come in contact - not according to the team of surgeons, radiologists and assorted other medical professionals I saw. it is supposedly a 'mixed signal' the body gets that causes the fistula to grow and develop and connect two body parts/organs in an awkward dysfunctional healing process. sue
