Stacee,

We use the markell shoes, I belive this is what most dr.'s use. If the child

gets out of shoes, blisters or has atypical cf, the 's seem to be more

comfortable and stay on. Dr. Ponseti has talked to us about the s, but

at this point our insurance pays all but $24 on Markells and nothing on the

s that are over $300. If our son has any more problems we will pay out

of pocket to get the 's.

Hopefully someone can tell you if the s use the same bar. When we

looked into it I thought it looked different, but that has been a month(a very

long month) ago.

the difference

after looking at the website http://www.mdorthopaedics.com/index.htm, but I'm

not

positive...

If the doctor prescribes the Denis Brown Bar, can it be used with any of the

following:

AFO/KAFO, Markell Shoe, or Shoe? Which is recommended by the Ponseti

Method? Which does everyone here have experiences with?

From what I saw online, it appears that the shoe is a million times

comfier (is that

a word?!?) than the Markell shoe, so why would anyone not use it instead of the

Markell?

Does the Markell offer better end results than the ?

I'm trying to get as many questions lined up, answered, and ready for my f/u to

the ortho

on the 22nd. I just found out that our insurance covers some braces/shoes/DBB

but at a

very limited dollar amount, so I'm trying to get the ball rolling before this

calendar year is

over to take full advantage of the 2005 benefit. I need to have all my

ammunition ready

when I see the ortho again so I can make requests, if need be.

On that topic, I have set up an appt with Ponseti on Jan 6th, which is hopefully

right after

ds will be out of his casts, so I'm anxious to see what he says about our story.

What would

all of you do in our shoes? Would you make specific requests for treatment

(e.g. the

mitchell shoes vs the markell) of the current doc or not? I don't want to

second guess him,

but at the same time if there are better options available to us, I'd like to

use them!! I

couldn't get Dr Lemke's asst to answer ANY questions about my son without an

eval, which

of course we can't do until he's out of the cast... All I really wanted to know

is what course

she usually uses--the markell, AFO/KAFO, or mitchell, or other method of

bracing, but

they wouldn't answer me. Makes me leery of going to see her. I just don't

understand

why a doc would choose one method over another if the other is proven... Does

that make

sense? Keep in mind that I am fully aware that each case is different, but

overall the

treatments are very similar...

Thanks for listening!

Hi Stacee,

As far as I know Dr Ponseti always used the Markell

shoes on a bar until recently when the shoes

were developed.

As I understand it the Markell shoes are perfectly ok

in most cases but for some (atypical) clubfeet the

shoes are needed.

I think the 's only come in small sizes though

(not sure) so I guess afterwards you'd have to use the

Markell's as well (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

The 's are hand-made and are more expensive

($300 I think) than the Markell's ($65 I think). I

think the Markell's are covered by some insurances as

well but not the 's, this might have changed

though. I think this is the reason that most people

still go with the Markell's, they're probably also

easier to get hold off.

Anyway, my son is also in the Markell's and has been

for over 3 years. We never had any problems at all.

He cried a little for the first 4 hours of wearing

them but since then he's been completely fine with

them. I think reading this board it always sounds as

if everyone has problems with the shoes but that's of

course only because people are much more likely to

write about it when there are problems than if there

aren't. :)

I think since you're getting a second opinion anyway I

would probably base this decision on finance. I.e. if

you have to pay out of pocket if you get what he's

prescribing only to have to pay again for the DBB then

I would request the DBB. If you don't have to pay any

extra, I would let him give you whatever it is he

thinks is best and then see what Dr Ponseti says.

Good luck,

with (3y)

I did double check with our insurance and they cover 80% of the cost of any

shoes, so if I

had a choice, I'd lean toward the s. I hate waiting, but I suppose

that's what I have

to do now... I find out next week what the overall plan is.

Thanks so much for the input from everyone!!
