Guest guest
, This is the first time I have ever heard of a clear ceramic bracket falling off and getting into your lung! I have clear ceramic braces both on my top teeh and bottom teeth. Only my back teeth on the bottom have the silver brackets. I also have surgical wires on and these were put on with no problem about a month ago. My ortho never mentioned them being changed for surgery and as far as I know I won't need to. I was very adamant about having ceramic braces too as I had them in the past and prefer them to the silver one which I also had for 4 years when i was younger. In terms of what the surgical wires are they are basically bigger, thicker and more rigid wires than the ones you have on at the moment. This is for surgery so that they can support what ever work gets done around them better and also I assume for banding or wiring. You'll see when they first put the wires on that your teeth seem to look a little less white i.e. the wire sticks out more in color than the traditional wires. AFter a while you get used to it and from a distance people still can't tell you've got braces so you should be alrite for your dance recitals. The only bad thing I would say about the surgical wires is that they really hurt the first couple of days because they are so rigid but a few advils every 6 hours should do the trick. It did for me. At the end of the day, putting on the surgical wires should be considered an accomplishment because you are that much closer to surgery! Sara > > Hi again. Guest guest
i think it really depends on how well aligned your teeth are. In my case because I'd already had braces on for ten years it was fairly quick to get my teeth aligned i.e. 4 months so they put the surgical wires on me 2 months ahead of surgery. However, some people don't get them put on until 1 month ahead or even less I think. Hooks also get placed in your mouth, typically about a week before surgery. AT least this is what I have been told but our veterans may know more than me on this front. Guest guest
I have the " clear " ceramic braces on top just like you and silver on the bottom. I had surgery---upper segmented Lefort (or whatever), lower advancement, and genioplasty---in late November '04 to correct a crossbite that was ruining my teeth. I wore the surgical wires for at least a month. I had NO PROBLEM with the ceramic braces w/ regard to either the surgical wires or surgery. No one ever even raised a concern. I'm doing great. The swelling has been totally gone for about a month. Still a little numb-ish in spots. It was hard for the first few days because of the swelling. Then for 10 days of being tightly banded and eating a liquid diet through a big syringe with a tube on the end (I didn't like Zip n Squeeze that much, although I LOVED their book, " The Healing Jaw " ). But, I am very happy I had the surgery. I have been in braces since January '04 and have about another 6 months to go. Good luck.
