Guest guest
Mara,I have made fermented veggies just once so far -- couldn't get the 4 other people in our house to enjoy it with me so I am just now finishing it myself! ; ) I used an old fashioned swing top glass canister. I never thought about it, but I wonder if light affects the quality?AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Wed, March 17, 2010 2:51:34 PMSubject: OT but related: Home canning has become trendy OT but related: Home canning has become trendy http://www.aldenteb log.com/2010/ 03/the-inevitabl e-canning- backlash. html with more links to canning books and etc. Also, has anyone bought a fermenting crock? They seem pretty expensive - am just wondering what solutions people have come to - worth it, or an alternate kind of thing is just as good, etc? http://www.harveste ssentials. com/mifecrpot5li .html Mara
Guest guest
Mara, Homemade sauerkraut is still on my todo list, but I did find a relatively inexpensive one gallon crock. Go to Amazon.com and do a search for " sauerkraut crock " . Among the results you'll find an Ohio Stoneware Old Fashioned Crock for about $15 USD. Guest guest
Hey Mara, I have a Harsch.. It's not needed at all. Takes some time to get used to as well... A plain glass jar is awesome as batches self correct! Guest guest
I want to can! I have a steam canner, but haven't used it yet. I'm going to do peaches this summer. I'd like to do tomatoes, but I can't remember if it's safe to use a steam canner with them.
