Hi all!

I had a consultation last week with a Ped Ortho, part of our HMO.

I'll be honest, I just wanted to go in there and just ask about

getting a referral to a Certified Ponseti Doctor. Dr. was really

nice, just walked in there and started talking about the procedure:

casting, tenotomy and brace. He must have been a great salesman in

a past life! He said everything right..except for, when I asked

about why he wasn't on Ponseti's list of certified drs. He turned

his head sideways a little and said, " Oh that! That's just a one-

day course up on Iowa. " I DON'T THINK SO! I smiled and proceeded

to ask what the percentage of corrected clubfoot was under his care

and he said " 100% " with a blinding bright white smile.

I proceeded to ask for my referral.

Even I (a newbie since last week) know that there is no way any one

doctor can have 100% results and that there is more to certification

than just a one-day visit with the Master!

Is it possible I'm wrong?

I'm not sure how much time they have to spend with Dr. Ponseti to get on his

list, but I do know they have to show positive results on a certain number of

patients, with pictures sent to Dr. Ponseti. So it may be just a one day course

(I'm not at all sure), but then they have to PROVE they learned something by

demonstrating it. I think over a couple years or so, at least.

Hi- here is what is entailed in the certification from Dr P himself

(in an email to me):

Before a physician's name is added to my web site list of qualified

physicians, I request that he furnish me photos of the feet of three

babies he has treated showing each before treatment was started, one

photo of each in a cast so I can evaluated the casting and molding,

and one showing the feet when treatment is complete. He must also

outline the treatment including age when casting was started, how

often casts were changed, what type of casting material was used,

were the casts long or short leg, how many casts were needed, did any

casts slip or were there cast sores, was a tenotomy done, was local

or general anesthesia used, what type of brace was prescribed, and

what wearing instruction were given. I then evaluate this material

and determine if the physician is following our treatment protocol

and achieving good results. Unfortunately while several physicians

from Michigan have come here to spend time working with me or to

attend our annual clubfoot teaching seminars, only Dr. has

submitted the required material.

I really admire how you asked the doctor the questions you did, and

then asked why! That is so great of you. I would deffianlty be

skeptical too if I were you. I doubt it's a one day process or the

list of qualifed doctors would be much longer. If I were you I would

e-mail Dr. Ponseti and see if he ever heard of the doctor, and if he

could suggest a doctor local to you. I also wouldn't believe the 100%

success rate, if he was that good we would all being going too

him!!!! What is his name, hopital & location? Good Luck on your

search you sound like you totally know what your doing!!! It is so

great that you are preparing ahead!!!!!!

THANKS HELEN!

That's exactly what I'm talking about. I got the impression that

this doctor was just " using " the Ponseti Method in name and probably

in general. But I just didn't get a good feeling about it.

I always try to go with my gut feeling.

I so agree with you Michele!! Good for you!! You probably shocked him

so much with your composure and knowledgeable questions that he had to

put on his " game face " lol!! Good luck with your referal and let us

know how it goes!!!

Janice you're the kind of Mommy we love and the kind most doctors hate! LOL!

You showed a lot of courage and I'm proud of you!!!

You are very right, doing the Ponseti Method is not just a " one day course " like

cooking lasagna at your ladies auxilary meeting! Geesh! There is a process to

follow to become certified - but more importantly there is a process to

correctly fixing clubfeet with the Ponseti Method that you don't just learn in a

day then go home an expert at it.

And you're right - not even our grand Dr. Ponseti himself has a 100% success

rate! LOL!

Anyway, I just wanted to pat you on the back for having your ducks in a row!

Have you decided what you'll do now? Did you get your referral?
