Don't allow the doctor to convince you to put your son back on gluten.

Youand your husband have noticed the changes and many pediatricians are not

advanced in their education and do NOT approve of the GFCF diet. So of course

they don't believe mom and dad, " what do we know about our kids. "

My son has Celiac's Disease and recently our gastro doctor told us to

put him on gluten for three months we said NO. We know the dramatic changes

are son has made and so have the dev. ped's doctor and the neurologist. They

told us proof is in our pudding not the gastro or pediatrician's. We now

what it did to our son. I can only speak from experience with my child.

Your son could have special blood work to detect IGa deficiency and

gluten intolerence issues without putting him back on gluten. It takes six

months plus to get gluten out of your system.

Hope this was somewhat helpful. I get wacky when doctors try to tell

us we don't know anything and they are the final answer. We live with our

kids 24/7.

Ask the doctor is she is trying to test for Celiac's disease. That

will be negative if somebody is on a gluten-free diet. The Gluten

and Casein Peptide Test (Great Plains offers it) will still detect a

problem even after awhile of being gluten and casein free.

Hi , I did no testing at all on my son, except for allergy testing

- just to make sure that I wasn't feeding him more offending foods. So I

got him allergy testsed and eliminated all foods that he showed even a

slight allergy to. My son has been 15 months GFCF and doing excellent.

He is 6 1/2 years old now. To me the true test is to try it and see if

it works. It was written somewhere (maybe Special Diets........... book,

that some times tests results could be wrong or not even show that the

diet could help, when in fact it can. I wiuld just say - go with it -

and best of luck. You have nothing to lose and just so much to benefit

from with the diet. It can't hurt your child - its not a drug that can

have side effects or later on damage. Either way you choose, I wish you

the best

I've encountered this attitude of testing the diet by going off of it. I've

heard this suggestion from a couple of sources and have the same response

as your husband.

My feeling is :

1) if the diet works, and works according to the proposed theory, then

intentionally taking my child off it is very much like giving a large dose

of dangerous drugs to my kid... unthinkable

2) if a professional wants to run experiments to verify the diet they

should get themselves some funding, a lab, and some experimental animals

(no offense meant to anti-vivisectionists out there).

NO WAY will I ever agree to anyone using my son for their interest in

studying what happens when you go off the diet, for the reason stated first.

Just my two cents, good luck.

I wouldn't put my daughter back on gluten or casein again.

I know the MD's want everything tied up nicely especially when they

don't fully understand it and they didn't come up with the solution.

I went to a gastro and allergy person before I started the diet and

no one wanted to do any labs on Sam. One person stated well most

kids with autism have loose stools and there isn't any reason to the

testing that he knew of. The allergies actually stated it " wouldn't

be worth it "

There is an increasing amount of literature out there if they need to

learn and there is a ton anecdotal stuff.

I just don't to live with the consequences. We are just getting over

a major infringement. I am becoming more than slightly paranoid about

what if the diet infringement behavior won't go away next time. So I

am become hypervigilant with what she eats.

I guess the ultimate question is how will the testing change what you

do with him/ or her. If the diet works it works.

Yes, if your child is having an upper or lower gi to test for this, they

must reintroduce the gluten for about 3 weeks prior. My friend did this

and her child regressed horribly. I refuse to do it and my son is being

tested tomorrow.
