Dana,My husband was a smoker who discovered he had UC soon after he quit smoking. Smoking suppresses the immune system, so if you have a small residual problem, even though being on SCD 4 years, your smoking is masking it. Having said that, since you are on SCD and it has been 4 years, I think that you could quit smoking and it not be a big issue. My husband just quit by reducing by one cigarette every few days until he was down to about 1 after dinner. If you taper this way (like with prednisone), I think you would be o.k. and notice quickly if things start to go out of control.Good luck! Hi All, Reaching out the the UC folks on the SCD who may have quit smoking. Though doctors have scred me into thinking I got sick because I had stopped smoking at the time, I just know this is not the case...thugh the research on smoking and UC is compelling.. . What possible positive benefit could cigarettes have? I am starting to think its because of poor dies, and having been on SCD for almost 4 years now... there has got to be a way to be ok as a non-smoker. Does anyone have success stories in this direction??? Will i have to forge the path...?I will say this, I'm not afraid of the non-smoking, just of the things I've read and my perfect gut condition being rocked by quitting!Sooooo

Not much more I can add except to agree. Especially with being on SCD 4 years. Think of cigarettes as prednisone or some other medicine.
