My doctor explained to me and insisted that I do not drink any kind

of carbonated beverages until I am three months post-op. Others I

have seen on this site drink Diet sodas with meals to aid digestion.

Others just enjoy them. Please post what your doctor recommended. I

am just curious. I am still going to follow my doc's orders but I am

just curious I guess. Thanks!

My surgeon told me no carbonation for 6 months after surgery. After that, I

can drink it, but if it's caffienated, I can't count it toward my daily

liquid intake, and under no circumstances am I to drink " regular " soda. It

HAS to be diet.

Bethany: My doctor recommends not going back to carbonated beverages

until goal weight is attained. There is little disputing the following

concerning carbonated beverages:

Carbonated beverages may be detrimental to the long-term success of

gastric bypass for the following reasons:

1. Carbonation: When the cold beverage is consumed, it warms and

releases gases, distending the stomach pouch. The stretching of the

stomach then creates undue stress and subsequently causes stretching of

the anastomosis,

2. Caloric intake: Many carbonated beverages are high in calories,

are low in nutritional value, and contain simple sugars. Not only do

they add additional calories with low nutritional value, but they are

absorbed quickly into the blood stream, causing a rapid rise in blood

sugar, elevated insulin levels and increased hunger.

3. Caffeine: Many carbonated beverages contain caffeine, an appetite

stimulant, which is detrimental to initial weight loss and long-term

weight control.

Now, my husband and I predominantly drank Diet Caffeine-Free Coke so 2

& 3 were not as much of an issue, but after my surgery my husband

virtually stopped drinking diet cokes and has lost 20 pounds, he and I

are convinced that the soda has a to do with it, his cravings have

diminished and the soda could have a lot to do with that. There's also

the FACT that soda has no benefit, water, milk, etc. have either the

benefit of the water itself or the vitamins and nutrients in milk so

why take the chance they could be right about the expansion of the baby

belly :)?

Good example of what happens with the expansion (from soda and

overeating) can be seen with a balloon. Take a brand-new balloon and

blow it up once, let the air out and watch what happens to the balloon,

it will NEVER again return to the original size it was, this is similar

to what happens to the baby belly.

Ok, stepping down from soapbox :). Hope that helps Bethany, I'm sure

that's more info that you were looking for :).
