Guest guest
Over the past 6 weeeks, I have lost 20 lbs by doing a lot of aerobic exercise and watching my calorie/protein intake. I have been keeping a food journal and have been exceedingly compliant on my vitamins, water, etc since I have been writing all of it down. The journal really opened my eyes every day to what I was skipping, not getting enough of, etc. It has been a tremendous help and am so glad my dietician suggested it. I had surgery 21 months ago and had stopped losing weight @ 5 months ago after dropping 155 lbs. I wanted to lose another 100 lbs (20 gone already) and for some reason, I have such an iron will right now that I am able to hold my caloric intake to @ 1200 to 1300 per day with no problem. I am getting plenty of protein as well and am also holding down my carb intake. I am ecstatic because the exercise is helping me re-shape everything and I am sure is the biggest reason the scale is down. The problem is, during these past 6 weeks, I keep getting fever blisters over and over on my face around my mouth. I am convinced it is due to some nutritional/vitamin deficiency but am not sure what. When I get a fever blister, I get a FEVER BLISTER. They are huge, painful and scar my face for a year before fading. I take oral zovirax to keep them from getting completely out of control but that stuff is hard on your system I want to see what I can do to avoid it. In my reading on the subject, it says you need to build up your immune system to avoid them and sometimes excessive exercise can cause them which I find quite funny since I am finally doing what my PCP has wanted me to do all along. I am only doing @ 5 to 6 hours of aerobics a week and I know that doesn't qualify as excessive. Has anyone else had this problem? What do you all suggest for building your immune system? I have been severely anemic but am coming out of that by using Nifirex liquid iron. My last feritin reading was 15 (@ 30 days ago) which was up from 5 two months ago. I take calcium, multi-vits, iron, vit C, B vits and glucosamine chondroiton regligiously. Any suggestions? R in Nashville

I found a good article about nutrition and cold sores at http://www.health911.com/remedies/rem_coldso.htm One thing mentioned is low b-12, which we know we always have trouble with. The other is too much arginine, and it lists there the foods that contain it, that you might want to cut back on. Hope it helps! ~~ Lyn
