Guest guest
This is cross-posted to: duodenalswitch , DS_Elariny , DS-Insurance_Authorization_Problems Part of our problem is that NIH is still behnd the times. They still show the BPD (Horizontal Gastric Transection) on their website with no metion of the DS. We need to get on NIH's case or the insurance companies will keep fighting the DS. Bob updating information about gastric bypass surgery > Bob: Thank you for the information about the gastric bypass fact sheet. WIN > is currently updating the fact sheet and will replace the current document > with the revised document. > ----- Original Message ----- The NIDDK Gastric Surgery for Sever Obesity Page seems to contain out-dated information related to current medical practices. http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/nutrit/pubs/gastsurg.htm depicts the RNY and an older form of the BPD that is no longer the " standard of care " in bariatric surgery. The current BPD/DS (Duodenal Switch) practiced in the US, which uses a vertical " sleeve " partial gastrectomy with preservation of the pyloric valve, seems to be missing for the described restrictive/malabsorption procedures. Also, the quoted statistics on your page seem to conflict with current peer reviewed research: 1) Hess, et al.: Biliopancreatic Diversion with a Duodenal Switch, Obesity Surgery, 8, 1998; 267-282 . 2) Scopinaro N, et al.: Biliopancreatic Diversion, World J Surg. 1998 Sep;22(9):936-46. " Obes Surg. 2001 Feb;11:54-59 Many of the above citations come from the NIH/NLM PUBMED Server using the search string " duodenal switch. " Current research seems to indicate that the DS procedure produces a greater loss of excess weight and may provide better long term outcomes. Please understand, the accuracy of information distributed by the NIH has a major impact on the ability of Americans to access appropriate health care. Many insurance companies deny benefits for the duodenal switch procedure because they claim that it is " experimental. " Thank you in advance for considering these comments; and I look forward to seeing updated content on your very informative site in the near future
