Kris-

I am a long time user of flax seeds and had my surgery 11/26/03. The

dietitian I work with supports the use of flax seeds but suggests slowly

adding them to your diet if you have not used them prior to surgery. What

you were told about seeds is absolutely correct! The difference is that

when anyone consumes flax seeds they should be ground. In their natural

state all the beneficial properties are sealed in the hull of the seed. By

grinding them we release all the good stuff and make them safe for

consumption, however, they should only be ground just prior to consumption.

They tend to spoil fast when the hull is broken. I use a cheap coffee

grinder to grind mine up. Once ground the flax seed can be added to

anything you bake, sprinkled on cereal or anything else you'd like to add a

nutty flavor to. You wouldn't want to eat more than two tablespoons

(ungrounded) a day though. A very simple recipe is to ground the flax seed,

add Splenda to taste and milk or hot water(just as you would oatmeal) and

have a hot cereal with it. For anyone that is interested, I get mine online

at www.bobsredmill.com , it's $8.42 for a case with 4 - 24 oz bags of

organic golden flax seed. Anyone that would like to learn more about flax

seeds can go to http://www.flaxcouncil.ca/flaxnut1.htm#General . I cannot

say enough good things about flax seeds and would encourage everyone to

research them and discuss their use with your surgeon/dietitian. I tend to

shy away from medical remedies for things like constipation when there are

fabulous natural remedies available…..the nurse in me hates drugs.

Subject: Conclusion to nutrition email

I emailed last week about the safety of taking flax and

pumpkin seeds. I had a doc appt on Monday and here's what

he said about it. He said our bodies aren't designed to

digest seeds. Further, the seeds could cause

diverticulitis (sp?) and could get stuck in the opening to

the small intestine and cause a blockage. So it's best to

stay clear of seeds.

For what it's worth -

Kris :-)
