Guest guest
Hi , I did the lactulose breath test last April, after only one month on SCD. I was so sick at the time that I didn't notice any effects from the test mix. Just to note, the breath test isn't considered highly accurate...do a search on BTVC and you can find a few threads on this. I think someone found statistics that said it was 20-50%, and I found a slightly higher range in the medical literature. You can avoid the breath test altogether by doing a stool test, which I believe is has a much higher accuracy rate. Just to note, I had two stool tests (I went through Genova and another " alternative " provider, and have used Metametrix in the past, also. These tests are more specific and accurate than what you'll get through conventional medicine) that showed severe overgrowth of things like klebsiella pneumonae and streps a and b, but I failed the breath test. One reason being that certain supplements can cause a false negative, and also if you have d at the time (which I did). Guest guest
don't remember exactly but I believe it loosened my bowels for a few days - after they swore it's not digested - yeah ok non-scd people!! LOL eileen 2 years scd > > Hi , > I did the test recently and it gave me lower abdomen gurgling, with some discomfort, gas and bloating. This occured later in the day, after the 3 hour testing period. > > My test (through QuinTron/Commonwealth)was only lactulose- no lactose, not that that really matters since the point of lactulose is that it is indigestible to us but digestible to the bugs! The quintessential illegal! > > I think stool tests are great too, especially Metametrix, but they are not testing the same thing. The breath test is for bugs in the Small Intestine whereas the stool test only reflects what's in the Large Intestine. BTVC is describing an SI bug problem. > > It's true, the test isn't that accurate. There isn't any other test for the SI though- except culturing which is even less accurate. GI docs say it's not great but it's all they have. > > Lots of people come up negative who have all the symptoms, myself included. It's possible our problems could be due to yeast and/or bugs in the LI but I think false negatives are probably very high. > > > IBS-C 35 years > SCD 8 months >
