Re: LeFort I Osteotomy, what is recovery period like?

I had LeFort I on November 16th and my recovery was pretty uneventful

except for a sinus infection around 3 weeks post-op (I really don't

think it had anything to do with the surgery, I just tend to get a

couple each year). I was lightly banded the first two weeks but

could take them off to eat soft chew food. Have not taken any pain

meds other than ibuprofen or tyelonol since the second day post-op (I

know that some people have some pain but I guess the numbness

prevented me from feeling any, which I am very thankful for). I did

experience some mild nose bleeds for the first week but it was no big

deal. Went back to work after two weeks but in hindsight probably

should have taken three as I tired easily. Lost 12 pounds total and

as of yet have not gained them back (I am actually trying not to).

At 8 weeks post-op I feel pretty much back to normal with the

exception of some very mild swelling to either side of my nose and

numbness in the middle of my top lip and gums but this gets better

each day.

Hope this helps and good luck.

, Felicia thank you both. You experience is different

natuarally. I am hoping to avoid overnight hospital stay. I am going

to ask my OS about that next week. Any of you know how much of

advancement did you gain. According to my OS he wants to move forward

3 millimeters.

I did not ask what the final number was when everything was said and

done, but my OS said he was thinking he would be moving my jaw up 6

millimeters before surgery was started. I do not think I was moved

forward or backward, just upward.

Come to think of it he didn't say and I never thought to ask. I know

that he moved it forward and then down to close my open bite but

don't know the numbers. I think I will give the office a call and

ask them. I will let you know what I find out.

As far as the overnight hospital stay I think I would have felt well

enough to go home had my surgery been done earlier in the day (did

not have surgery until 1:00 in the afternoon)but the doc's may have

reasons for keeping one overnight. They kept me on an antibiotic IV

overnight as well as the compression wraps with the pump on my legs

to prevent blood clots so that may be two good reasons. The

compression wraps are pretty standard fare for anyone having surgery

in the hospital I work for but protocols may be different in other

facility's.

I had my surgery 8 weeks ago.

Pain wasn't too bad - worst was when I was tightly banded in the

hospital. But I did average one dose of the liquid pain meds per day

for the first week.

Was on liquids for the first week and soft foods for weeks two through

six. At six weeks, the doctor cleared me to eat anything I want.

I had surgery on a Thursday, was back at work on Monday, 11 days

after. Didn't lose my energy or stamina at all, but did feel slightly

miserable with the swelling and liquid diet for the first week - I'd

liken the misery factor to something less than a head cold.

I'm still slightly swollen - but, like , I'm the only one who can

tell. And, the right upper portion of my mouth (hard & soft palate and

gums) is still numb.

I used almost none of the stuff I gathered for my post-op care and

feeding - didn't need a syringe, zip-n-squeeze, ounce of Ensure. Best

investment for me was a combo cold & hot pack and some Yoplait

smoothies (for the first week).

Hope this helps. And, hope your experience is as easy as mine has been.
