Guest guest
We had the peptide urine tests done to check for the gluten and casein. It didn't cost us anything as the Autisum Center here received funding to test 150 kids. Our son is not autistic, but has motor and speech delays. His OT is the one the recommended that we have the tests done, because of his lack of speech. Good luck Rhonda (also a newbie)

My wife who's more critical about the diet than me became convinced it was effective after we saw the affects of infringements last spring (and others, but spring break was the real kicker). >We are on a limited budget and want to spend wisely. Since the diet can't hurt anything - we didn't, and don't, see any harm to doing it w/o the benefit of tests. We also haven't been to any DAN doctors; our son's ABA pre-school repeatedly mentioned the one in our area after we said we put on the diet. But he sounds expensive and our insurance won't cover it, and since we don't know of any great reasons to see him we haven't. >Also what do you do with a child that refuses food (normal food), I will >never be able to get him to eat the gluten free. This sounds similar to our experience but far more extreme. was below the weight chart all his life until a few months after we put him on the GFCF diet. Now he looks just right for a 4 1/2 yr old imo and last time he was charted he was at the 15th percentile. If it were my child I would consult with the doctor and explain what you want to do; maybe print off some of the science behind it from the gfcfdiet.com website or bring a copy of " Special Diets... " to loan the doc. With medical supervision I would hope you could get your child to change to a GFCF diet and not worry about health risks during the transition period.
