Why do you have to rotate the greens? Each green family has a tiny amount of a toxin in the greens, (like oxalates for spinach, and the ones that cause thyroid issues for kale) so you're supposed to rotate so you don't build up a bunch of the same toxin. Here's a website on why you should rotate: http://greensmoothiesblog.com/green-smoothie-rotate/ Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Chinese Herbs (not legal but helping!)

I would just use one this time, another one next time. Yeah, they

aren't in different families, but they do have some differences, after

all. I gave up on trying to rotate foods decades ago, because I

simply haven't ever had enough to do it with.

I never thought about that, thanks for mentioning it!

I juice greens every morning. Celery, parsley, kale, cucumber. How do you make smoothies????? Why do you rotate? There's a lot of info on green smoothies online, but basically its just a fruit smoothie with leafy greens (spinach, kale, etc...) blended in. See my earlier post on rotating greens, there's a website. Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Chinese Herbs (not legal but helping!)

Hey Alyssa,

From my Green Smoothie Revolution Book:

" You can rotate your greens in any way that is convenient to you. Some people

put a different type of green in their smoothie every day. Others put a variety

of greens in each smoothie. I recommend rotating a minimum of seven varieties

of greens, one for each day of the week. Try to get as much variety as

possible. The larger the assortment of greens you consume, the broader the

spectrum of vital nutrients your body receives. "

She also says (and part of this I know you already know), " Green leaves are

typically the most nutritious part of the plant, and creatures naturally want to

eat them. Plants carry a trace of alkaloids in their leaves to ensure that

animals will move on to eat other green plants and will not exterminate any one

species. Although alkaloids are poisonous in large quantities, in small

quantities they cannot hurt you, and even strengthen the immune system. The

science of homeopathy is based on this principle. however, if you keep

consuming kale, or spinach, or any other single green for many weeks without

rotation, eventually the same type of alkaloids can accumulate in your body and

cause unwanted symptoms of poisoning. Most greens contain different alkaloids,

which is why, by rotating the variety of greens in our smoothies, we can avoid

poisoning and strengthen our immunity. "

So she doesn't suggest a specific time line of rotation but as long as you have

a good variety and aren't eating the same green everyday for weeks I think

you'll be just fine.

I do, but at the moment I'm juice fasting to control a flare. Usually my

favorites are a green (kale, spinach, chard etc), banana, pineapple and

strawberry. I also like green, banana, mango and a bunch of other berries like

raspberry, blackberry & strawberry. Occasionally if I'm in the mood for a more

dessert type flavor I'll do one with banana (I pretty much use it as a base in

most of my smoothies, plus it's filling!), swiss chard (or spinach but the chard

is sweeter), 2 dates (or a little honey), and cinnamon. I'll usually add a

small bunch of pecans or pecan butter to make it extra tasty and maybe a little

coconut oil if I feel like it.

Is there a particular place online that you go to find out which greens have

which alkaloids? I know that weeds are recommended in a lot of green smoothie

sites/books because of the nutrients they provide but I'm not sure they're SCD

legal unfortunately.

I like kiwis in smoothies, too. And I know that those are

featured in some of the smoothy recipes in the Green

smoothy book.

This week I made a savory smoothy - a recipe I used to make

from time to time pre-SCD. Tomato juice diluted, whole avocado, cilantro,

jalapeno, yogurt. (I used to also add tomatillos to them, but didn't

have any on hand.)

I had a liquid lunch and then drank the rest for snack in the afternoon.

Alyssa wrote:"I just know that all the greens in one family have the same type of alkaloid, so if you find out which greens are in which family then you can find out what alkaloid they have. For instance, spinach, chard, and beet greens are all in the same family (bummer) so they all have oxalic acid."------When I was researching green smoothies and green smoothie recipes, I remember learning that buckwheat greens contain a chemical called "fagopyrin" that can cause toxic reactions if eaten in sufficient quantity. I don't actually know if the greens of the buckwheat plant would be legal or illegal for SCD. I never found out because the itchy skin rash that can occur pretty much quieted my curiosity about

it. However, if you're interested in trying a new green but don't know its nutrient profile, just doing an internet search can be tremendously helpful. Best, Nina in MA
