Guest guest
Hello! I am new to this group, but not new to plagiocephaly. My 7 month 3 week old daughter has torticollis which of course has led to positional plagiocephaly. At 5 months the craniofacial specialist told us to keep doing positional therapy and PT at home and come back in 3 months. Well, today we had our followup. He basically said that the decision to helmet is up to us and my daughter is a " middle of the road case " . He said that it would be ok if we didn't helmet her, but a helmet may " speed up the process " of her head rounding out. As far as I'm concerned, her plagiocephaly is mild to moderate with very minimal facial assymmetry. How did you all go about the decision to helmet? Have many of you had good results of positional therapy after the age of 6 months? Thank you for your help, A~ P.S. My husband is against the helmet therapy and I am still undecided. Guest guest
Hi there. I also struggled with the decision to band my daughter. My husband was for it from the get-go. My daughter is at 8.4mm assym., which makes her on the beginning of the moderate spectrum. I don't really see it at all, especially since she's getting hair. However, the kicker for me was when the doctor told us that since Emmy's facial structure was off, she would probably look 'off' as an adult. Emmy's head started to round out when she was 6 months and able to sleep on her tummy. Emmy just got her helmet last week (at 9 and a half months), so it's too early to tell how she's progressing. But I can tell you that she could care less about the helmet (we got a pink one and put flower stickers on it to make it cute). Good luck and let us know! Guest guest
My son just got his helmet last week and started wearing it 23 days ago full time (23 hours) we went into hangers for a check up and they measured his head in only one week and 3 days of full time his head went from 8mm to 4mm. I think that's pretty amazing. i say the sooner the better he's 6 months and i am so happy with the progress we are already seeing even if you only wear the helmet until your happy with it, it's worth it. We tried positional therapy for 2 months before banding and had very little results i think it stopped it from getting worse but didn't do much rounding. I suppose it also depends on the severity my boy has moderate plagio i think maybe if he had mild i would have try ed the PT for longer. We are still in PT working on his torticollis. Good luck > > Hello! > > I am new to this group, but not new to plagiocephaly. My 7 month 3 week old daughter has torticollis which of course has led to positional plagiocephaly. Guest guest
Thank you for your responses! I have just made an appointment for a free assessment at an orthotist. I figure the more information I have the better. The orthotist mentioned that plagio could cause problems in the future such as TMJ and jaw alignment. However, I think if there was a problem like that involved the craniofacial specialist would have advised us to go ahead and do helmet therapy instead of leaving it up to us. I'll be sure to keep you all informed. Thanks again for your helpful and kind responses. Alissa > > > > > > Hello! > > > > > > I am new to this group, but not new to plagiocephaly. Guest guest
Hi guys! Just wanted to say thanks for all the support. We had an appointment with the orthotist this week and my daughter does NOT qualify for a helmet! It looks like positioning and stretching her torticollis did the trick. I'm pretty relieved and still thankful we decided to get it check out anyway. Alissa > > > > > > Hello! > > > > > > I am new to this group, but not new to plagiocephaly.
