Guest guest
Hi Miley- Most of us have banded our babies, with a just a few who did not (and unfortunately, not many of them are active on the board anymore). I'm curious, if you already have the band, why have you decided not to use it? It does work and with your daugher already 10 months old, will work faster than any natural rounding. We were told we didn't have to band my son so we didn't (when he was 4 months old), but his head did not correct and we did band when he was 17 months old, much later than is recommended. Although we got great results with the band, he still has plagio measured at 5mm (probably only visible to me, but it's still there). So in my experience, natural rounding out is definitely not a guarantee. I would do anything to go back in time and band my son at an earlier age, I regret not doing that every day. And if so, what were the results? > A little background on us- my daughter Lilly is now 10 months. She had tort which we noticed when she was about 2 weeks old. She started PT at 3 months and her tort is resolved now. However, she developed a pretty severe case of plagio and peaked at it's severity around 6 months. It was at that time she began sleeping on her belly and was never on her flat spot again. Our ped from day 1 has been against helmet therapy. But we went against her and took Lilly to be evaluated by both Cranial Technologies and Hanger. CT never told us what her measurements were but just told us she was a candidate. We then took her to Hanger where they measured her asymmetry at 10 mm. At that point she was 8 months and her head had gotten better- I've been taking photos every two weeks and had noticed a difference. It makes me believe that at its worst it was pretty severe! We decided to atleast try the band so we got her fitted with Hanger. We took her back 2 weeks later and her asymmetry was down to 8 mm. Her forehead bulge which was quite prominent at one point is gone and her facial asymmetry is non-existent anymore. So now we're looking at just fixing a flat spot. > Anyway, we got the band but have decided against using it. And we feel good about that decision. But I was just wondering if anyone else decided against it and what their results were. How do you feel about your decision now? > > Thanks! > > Miley >
Guest guest
I agree....if you have the band you might as well use it. My son was at 12mm at 4 months old and then went down to 10mm at 6 months, but we still banded him. He is now 7 months and I already see a big improvement. There is a chance that he would've rounded out without the band, but why risk it...especially since you already have it?? > > > > Hi everyone, > > I'm new here but was wondering if anyone chose not to band their baby. Guest guest
Thanks so much for your responses. Our reasons for not banding are actualy ones you've probably never heard of. I am fine with the band and am willing to go through the motions of the whole thing...my problem is sleeping with it. Our son passed away in his sleep at 20 months of unknown causes so you can imagine that sleeping is difficult for us. I just don't think I can ever lay her down to sleep with the helmet on...it just seems just more thing to have to worry about. I know she would be fine but my mind is irrational these days and I think up the most ridiculous things in my head! We debated about just using when she's awake but what good would that really do? She would never truly get used to it and I feel like to get the results we would ultimately want that she would have to wear it for the 23 recommended hours. After actually discussing our reasons to not band with Hanger they actually told us we were making the right decision. I really cannot say better things about Hanger...they were so great! We've agreed to go back at 12 months and have them measure her head again. I figured that most people here decided to band just thought I'd see! Thanks, Miley > > > > Hi everyone, > > I'm new here but was wondering if anyone chose not to band their baby. Guest guest
Your reasoning is totally understandable. I am sorry for your loss. You as the parents know what is right for your family. We also used a Hanger Band, and we were very pleased with the results and the time the staff spent with us. Glad your experience was good as well and you are able to go back and get measurements.! Guest guest
I'm so very sorry for your loss. I can totally understand your fear of her sleeping in it. You have obviously made the best choice for your family. And I'm glad Hanger has been so great about it. It would be great if you could update us at 12 months and let us know if her measurements improved any more. Good luck! Guest guest
I too am sorry to hear the sad history behind your decision . No wonder you felt nervous about it all. My very best wishes to you and your family. Pamela   On Fri, May 29, 2009 at 3:27 PM, rlbgerhardt <rlbgerhardt@...> wrote: Your reasoning is totally understandable. I am sorry for your loss. Guest guest
I am so sorry about your loss....of course you would be very nervous...as any parent would. My brother-in-law (who is a pediatrician)has told me that he has seen many children who probably should've been banded, but didn't for various reasons...and they all ended up having " round " heads. 8mm is pretty mild. Only you know the correct decision for your family and I am sure that is the correct one. Good luck with everything and keep us posted!
