Guest guest
Okay, having just come from having my hair done, and trying to keep my sense of humor, I'm sharing a concern and hoping for some input. My hairdresser pointed out a BALD SPOT at the nap of my neck, pure bald circle, about the size of a silver dollar. She's only somewhat concerned because it was as " soft as a babie's bottom " and clearly bald. No hair. No rash. No signs of irritation. No nothing ... especially hair. =) There's hair all around it, and somewhat below it, so I can wear my hair up and hide it ... kinda. I'm very good with my hair, wear it long, just below the shoulder, layered, celophaned/tinted quarterly, and curled every day. Always get compliments on it, but that's not the point. Yes, I'm into hair and makeup, but not THAT vain. I don't think, anyway ... well ... maybe JUST A TAD. Anyway, my concern is what's causing it. I had my hairdresser look at it real good, and she thinks it may be stress, or from my panniculectomy surgery last Feb. 14, maybe leftover stress or surgery related or anesthesia? Since I'll be 48 on Saturday, tomorrow, my hair is getting a little thin with age, and more so in the back, but this is something else. I was wondering if maybe I might not be absorbing something. I take my 2-3 protein shakes per day, get in plenty of supplements and vitamins, eat well, and really don't malabsorb to my knowledge. Last time I checked (Oct. 2002), my labs were really good ... normal, actually. So, should I run (not walk) to the dermatologist? No alopecia in my family. I'm just wondering if it's a deficiency. The location is hidden (thank God), and, even though I work on my hair daily ... I never saw it. My hairdresser said not to freak out, that she can see very fine, baby hairs in the area and that's hopeful it's going to fill in and is just a temporary thing. Me ... I'm kinda freaking out. Post-surgery related ... maybe? It's right at the back of my head, at the top of my spine (or nap of the neck), size of a silver dollar or slightly larger. Anyone? Guest guest
Hi Bobbie! My 22 year old daughter had the exact same thing happen to her. She went to the doctor and was told it was a form of alopecia. He said it would grow back, which it did. He said it was probably caused by stress and may never happen again. Hers was over a year ago and hasn't happened again so maybe it never will. So try not to worry. Our bodies do alot of weird things don't they? I am not a doctor...so if it gets worse, please consult your doc. Guest guest
Bobbie, I had a very simular thing happen to me 4 or 5 yrears ago. My " spot " was not completely bald but extremely thin. It was noticeable because it was at my crown. I had to grow my hair a bit longer in that area for almost a year to hide it. Yes, I was very concerned that it must have been due to something lacking in my nutrients. You'll never believe what caused it! My hair has always been very think. Being from Florida, I wear my hair up a lot. I was wearing the ponytail to tight and over time the hair just wore away or pulled out. My hairdresser was also the one who told me. It has all grown back and the only thing I'm being told now is that I'm starting to get grays...oh yeah!? Hope this helps, Dawn

Every so often, I would get tired of taking pills and just not do 'em. Every time I laid off the synthroid, I would develop one of these little bald circles on my head, about the size of a fifty-cent piece to a silver dollar size. I would then go to the dermatologist and get a cortisone injection in the bald spot and the little baby fine fuzzy hairs would start growing in again in a short time. I finally got tired of getting shots in my head (scalp) --they're wicked painful, and resigned myself to the fact that I'm just going to have to take synthroid forever. I'm 61 now, and have had no more bald spots, and I've never tried to go off the synthroid any more either. I had very thick hair until after my babies; then it got sort of thin. My hair did fall out a lot after WLS, finally stopped around month 7. It's thinner than ever before, but not falling out at all anymore. Maybe you should have your thyroid checked. Get a full screen, not just the TSH. Sue Rudnicki knows a lot about thyroid. Check further with her. Carol A
