Oh...and I'm barely anemic anymore, just slightly below normal! That's so fantastic!! Just wondering: did you do anything specific to help with the anemia? My hemaglobin (I think) is apparently 8.7, which is apparently very low, which is apparently not good. I don't know why this anemia came back with such a vengeance after it went away with the green smoothies, but it has. Grr.I know in the past people have mentioned that anemia can come from different things, not just iron deficiency. My mom just told me that they know my anemia is from iron deficiency because of the size of my red blood cells. Does this mean anything to anyone?I'm open to suggestions for getting more iron, although I pretty much know what the responses are going to be: cook in a cast iron skillet, eat beef and liver, get plenty of vitamin C with your iron, eat beets and dark leafy greens... Peace =)Alyssa 16 yo UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Azathioprine 50 mg 1x per dayPrednisone 40 mg 1x per day

Alyssa,You might want to check out this wikipedia entry titled anemia of chronic disease http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anemia_of_chronic_diseaseI think you will find it interesting and might explain why your best efforts are failing. I don't know, but maybe having iron shots with possibly B12 would help your iron levels.AmeliaFrom: Alyssa

Alyssa,

Iron is a main part of hemoglobin in red blood cells. When there is iron

deficiency, it changes the size of the red blood cell- makes them smaller. When

you get a CBC, they also measure the size of the red blood cells, so if there is

anemia, they can tell if iron deficiency is the likely cause.

You can get iron deficiency from lack of iron in the diet, poor absorption, or

blood loss. Loosing a little bit of blood from the GI tract over a long time can

do this.

Hope you feel better,

PJ

Alyssa,I think the term for the size is MCV - mean corpuscular volume, but I am not certain. When my husband was trying to raise his iron levels, the doctor was perplexed that his hemoglobin was going up, but the MCV was going down at the same time. I asked her to do the specific tests to see about iron sequestering, but she didn't do one of the ones I suggested because she felt it was 'old fashioned', and in the end wasn't able to determine anything.
