Hi ,

I had braces previously in high school and I don't remember any pain

or discomfort from their removal at all at that time. All the brackets

and bands were just popped right off and the cement was cleaned off,

minor tooth shaping was done for aesthetics, and I was good to go.

None of that was painful. I have likewise heard stories of stories of

pain and discomfort. I'm not sure what may have been going on in those

cases like maybe painful sensitivity, or the teeth were so loose, or

maybe not ready. I have no idea. BUT, in my experience, I had no pain.

Good luck!! You're lucky and I wish I was ready to get mine off!!!

I agree with Katja, I've had braces on 3 times before now and every

time they were taken off it felt FANTASTIC!!! Not painful. If

anything, it feels weird to feel your teeth again with your tongue,

it's like rediscovering your mouth all over again. This said, braces

are aggressive on the teeth - my teeth have become very sensitive as

a result so that may be the discomfort people are talking about.

Basically this means watching out when you eat hot and cold foods,

the change in temperature can shock the tooth and nerves. But other

than that, enjoy the sensation of your smooth teeth and your

beautiful new smile!

Yes, it did hurt some for me. Actually getting the brackets off was a

piece of cake, but when they grind off the glue is when it gets

uncomfortable. It helps if you have healthy gums, so if you haven't

been flossing daily then now's the time to start. My ortho commented

to his assistant during the removal that it was nice to be working on

someone with healthy gums for a change, and I take it they can tell

from the amount of swelling and bleeding. I didn't have any bleeding,

but a week later when I went to my dentist for a cleaning he said I

should floss more because my gums looked swollen. They were actually

still swollen from the braces removal, not from lack of flossing, as I

flossed daily for the 2 years I was braces (this from a guy who was

previously a once a year flosser).

Anyway, it's not terrible, but it's something of a long procedure so

take some Advil prior and just settle down and try to relax. And

floss! You may also have some mild discomfort for a few days

afterwards as the teeth adjust to their new freedom.

Although, it was quite a few years since my braces was remove, I

thought it was not too bad. It was a tiny bit uncomfortable. You may

feel some pressure. Pain wise it not that painful. After your braces

are remove,it may feel a little weird.
