Processed (fermented) cheeses, yes. Ditto for yogurt and kefir.

Cottage cheese (other than lactose free cottage cheese), no.

I've noticed most people who are truly lactose intolerant can't eat any

dairy, including cheese, but for most of us post-ops, we come to assume

we're lactose intolerant because of our reaction to milk (which is usually

dumping or worse). And there's something in the processing of these products

that changes the carb & lactose values of things made with milk.

I just did a fridge check to read some labels, and here's what I got:

Fat free milk

carbs 11g

sugar 11g

Monterrey Jack Cheese (full fat)

carbs 0g

sugar 0g

Cottage cheese (2%)

Carbs 4g

Sugar 2g

Cream Cheese

Carbs 2g

Sugar 2g

I can eat any of the last 2 just fine, but milk sends me directly to the

bathroom. For the longest time post-op, I would wonder why, when I would

have cereal with no added sugar like shredded wheat of All-bran, I would

dump hard and then get diarrhea. It finally dawned on me that it wasn't the

cereal, it was the milk.

I agree that milk " products " aren't as bad for me. I have a bad reaction to

milk, even in a latte, but I absolutely don't have the same reaction to

heavy cream or cheese products.

At first, when many doctors are encouraging milk, it takes a while to figure

out that it's the milk giving you diarrhea, gas and dumping.
