Guest guest
Hi everyone, Well, I just got the lab results back which were done last week at my new PCP. Keep in mind that this was left on my answering machine so I don't have exact levels until I can get them to give me a copy of everything done. " Your hemoglobin and ferritin are still low and the doctor is referring you to a hemotolgist for probable iron infusions " . There was more but that was the meat of it. My new PCP seems pretty WLS-wise as compared to my last one. She certainly has more WLS patients. I remember reading about a couple of you getting iron infusions and of course, didn't pay too much attention at the time. NOW I need info! How often? How long does it take? How much $$, if not covered by ins.? Any pain? Side effects? This WOULD explain why I battle chronic sleepiness and why my concentration levels are so poor sometimes, right? Thanks for all your help! Sharon P. Obviously getting up in the middle of the night, taking 3 Carbonyl Irons with a Vit. C. didn't help anything. *sad face*
Guest guest
I'm in the middle of my first series of iron infusions now - I've had the first two, one more to go. I battled my iron for 2 years, tried all different kinds of oral iron and nothing really helped. I was referred to a hematologist and was shocked that he was very familiar with WLS patients and has even treated some for anemia. After some more testing to make sure that it was the WLS causing my anemia and not some other problem, we decided on IV iron, or iron infusions. There are some possibly serious side effects to them (anaphylaxis - he told me 1 out of 10,000 people will die from the reaction to the iron), but for me they've been very uneventful. I've had more of a reaction to the Benadryl that they give me first than I have to the iron itself. The only pain was from the nurse not being able to find my vein and poking around under my skin with the IV needle. Ouch! Best of all, after two treatments (the second was Wednesday), I'm actually feeling much better - no more of that weariness that I was feeling. I haven't gotten the bill for them yet so I can't help you there. When I asked about IV iron a month ago, I got a ton of responses (and thank you to all who sent them that I haven't responded to yet!), most of them very helpful, so I'm sure that you'll get a lot of great info too. ------------------------------------------------ Terry Mayers 5DollarHosting.comR http://www.5dollarhosting.com (877)-838-HOST / .... because it shouldn't cost a fortune to make a fortune! Guest guest
I suggest that you switch to taking your iron supplements in iron amino acid chelate form. This is the form that is used in prenatal vitamins because it is so easily passed through to the fetus. An iron amino acid chelate molecule is a dipeptide, it has one molecule of iron and two molecules of amino acid. It is small enough, about 350 Daltons, that it can go into the inner intestine without being broken down by digestion. There the body can easily strip away the amino acid molecules and use the iron. Iron supplements in amino acid chelate form can be bought at http://www.vitacost.com/Store/Products/ProductDescription.cfm?SKUNumber=03398401\ 2509 The ingredient is listed as " Iron Bisglycinate. " That is the brand name for Albion Labs product. Two of the bariatric supplement vendors also use iron amino acid chelate as their supplement form. If you want their name, email me privately Ray Hooks For WLS nutrition info, visit http://www.bariatricsupplementsystem.com lilwhistler@... wrote: > > Hi everyone, > > Well, I just got the lab results back which were done last week at my new > PCP.
