Guest guest
Hi All- must be time for updates. just had a checkup-we were told not to come back until february but we have been concerned(as was his PT) about his inability to bear weight by himself. It seems that he tends to roll onto the inside of his feet(they call it " pronation " ). I believe the main cause for this is his extreme flexibility which his ortho says he shall outgrow. He did tell us he can see that is on the verge of walking and by 18 months-he should be walking-not very reassuring to my husband who wants him walking now- LOL. I personally prefer the crawling-easier to keep track of. However, he was prescribed an insert for both feet to help stabilize the heel/ankle and help him bear support. It's not an AFO-its called an SMO-and I think they are really cool looking. Check out the link below-the coolest part is the company that designed this innovative and comfortable orthotic-makes me think of our buddy - is right here in my home town!! Apparently he teaches/trains doctors all over about this orthotic-its used primarily to help children with low muscle tone-specifically Down's kids. Check out his link: http://www.surestep.net/about.html We had a feeling that this was coming.Dr P mentioned this pronation when he reviewed david's pictures. The whole flexibilty thing blows me a way every time david demonstrates it. Our ortho tells us its not just his feet but his ankles and his knees and his hips and his shoulders and his wrist and his toes and his fingers-get the hint?! His doc did say it wasn't pathologically caused but genetically caused and although rare to see such an extreme flexibilty in a cf kid-it does help . He demonstrated on my husband as to where the flexibility comes from by bending my husband's thumb back against his wrist. My husband thought everybody could do that-LOL. All in all it was a good checkup and his doc feels that his feet look great and cf wise are doing wonderfully. He just wants to help us get him more stable!! Take care, welcome to all the new parents out there! kathleen mom to david 8/28/04 bcf fab 12/
