Guest guest
One piece outfits that can slip down off the shoulders...more or less peel off the baby...work well too when snap pants aren't available. s. I would strongly advise you to find pants for your son that completely unsnap in the leg area. It makes for much easier diaper changes once in the DBB, and less risk of putting the DBB on incorrectly after a diaper change. Also takes much less time! Guest guest
Hi , Congratulations! I have two boys (Devon 3 and Aidan 8 mos bi-lateral clubfoot). My son Aidan went to daycare the day after he came out of casts and into the DBB. I printed off the tips and tricks sheet from this websie and gave it to my daycare provider. I also showed her how to put the shoes back on in case his foot came out while he was there. Something I hadn't showed her was how to put the shoe back on the bar if that happened. I didn't anticipate it and of course that happened. So you would want to explain that as well. Aidan just had his second tenotomy last week and he goes back to daycare on Monday with casts. I'm going to explain to my daycare lady that she needs to check his toes for good blood flow and make sure that they are warm. I'm also going to explain to her that the toes should remain approximately in the same place at the end of the casts. Aidan managed to pull his foot back in his last set of casts at 3 months and his poor little foot was kind of a mess. I think someone else told you to purchase clothes that snap all the way through the legs. I've found that is pretty much my childs wardrobe. Of course right now his casts are so big at 8 months hardly anything fits. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and your little guy. Take care. > > Has anyone had their child in daycare while he/she was still in the > casts or brace? Guest guest
- Congratulations on your upcoming son! My son was in daycare(and still is)-he began at 12 weeks. We didn't know about his clubfoot condition before we enrolled at daycare so it was as much of a surprise to us as it was to his teachers. We made it as easy as possible clothing wise for his teachers-snap onesies that would cover the casts completely and also were easily removable for diaper changes. He had a couple " exploding " diapers at school and his teachers did the best to clean/wipe his casts clean for us. The shoes were a pretty easy transition. We just explained to his teachers the importance of them and if he happened to slip off or have an accident in which he needed his socks changed-to call us and we would come and take care of it. We have been blessed with the daycare that our son has received. Let me know if you have any questions-I would love to help! hth, kathleen mom to david bcf fab 12/7 > > Has anyone had their child in daycare while he/she was still in the > casts or brace? Guest guest
Congrats! Our first was born with unilateral right c/f. We were very nervous to send him to day care at 10 weeks old because of the clubfoot. We interviewed several different people to care for our son and told each one of them about the clubfoot. I told them ahead of time, because I wanted to get a " gut reaction " from them. I wanted to see that reaction. Some I sort of saw their faces drop a bit, others seemed completely unphased. Before Zach's first day at day care, I brought him in, with the DBB and showed them how to put it on (it's really not much different from putting on a pair of shoes - truly. You just have to make sure you put it in the right buckle hole so they don't slip out. For that, we placed a mark on the hole with a permanent marker. By the time it wore off - it was time to loosen them anyway and we were able to put a new mark. In addition to showing them, I had them try to do it themselves (in front of me). I did this " training " with everyone at the day care, because you never know who may have to cover for a room. I also employed " scare tactics " - right or wrong, it made me feel more at ease with the responsiblity I was giving them. I wrote up " our story " on some cute paper and printed it out. To this story, I placed a photo of Zach's foot prior to correction, and after. In the story, I made mention that our son can now walk thanks to Dr. Ponseti - if we are diligent about the use of the bar he may lose his ability to walk (okay, not entirely true if they only forget one time to put it on - but I made it sound like that could happen - again, right or wrong?). They placed this over his cubby for everyone to see and another near the changing table. They always did a great job! Once he went down to naps and nights only there was a time that I forgot to bring the bar with me to day care. They actually called me at work - GREAT SIGN that they are being just as diligent about everything as we were at home. I have to ditto the whole onesie time outfits with snaps - they are a must. You don't want to require them to take off and put on the bar any more than they have to. OH, and I once your little one become mobile, you'll definitely want to pad the bar - I was more worried about the other kids in his room than I was Zach at this stage of the game. I was afraid he was going to nail one of the kiddos in the head or on a finger. Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for the offer of a daycare provider, but Springfield is a bit too far for us. We live in McLean, my husband works in Reston & I work in Arlington -- so, we're looking for something close to home. If you would recommend any other providers in the Tysons Corner area, please let me know. I'm due in February & we'll need a provider starting in mid-April. Yes, we are planning to go to Dr. Herzenberg in Baltimore. I've heard he's the best from many different sources, including the orthopedist who treated my husband's clubfeet 30 years ago! We hope to meet with him before our little man is due. You mentioned that after the casts are done we don't need to make the weekly trip. How often do you think we'll need to go after the casts? Thanks, > Has anyone had their child in daycare while he/she was still in the > casts or brace? Guest guest
, My husband was treated with casts & braces (not the Ponseti method) that didn't correct his clubfeet, so at 16 months he had the surgery. Thankfully the surgery was a success and he has been active in sports (baseball, soccer, rugby) for years. In fact, he considers his corrected feet an assest on the rugby pitch because they are easily able to turn in thus providing better balance. I'd say the only limitation has been in trying to ice skate and ski -- the boots are too restrictive and hurt his feet. I'll definitately check out the Fairfax County website for other daycare providers. Thanks! > > Has anyone had their child in daycare while he/she was still in the > > casts or brace? Guest guest
Many Mom's and Dad's would love to stay home with their children but can't find a way to do so. Unfortunately, for many - even " selling everything " won't do the trick. So, if your child has to attend day care, don't beat yourself up over it - it's something many of us HAVE to do. My first attended day care and he is one awesome little dude. He was born with clubfoot - and I would hardly consider him a " special needs " child. Yes, he needed a little extra attention when it came to taking off and putting on the DBB - but really, you'll find that it's nothing more than putting on a pair of shoes (that, of course your child care provider will have to understand it's importance and practice diligence) I guess for some, the experience is quite an " ordeal " - but I have to reassure you, that it isn't always. Our situation was " ideal " in terms of treatment and his response to the treatment. Once we " got the hang of things " everything was done with ease. So, I would hate for you to worry and think that this has to be an ordeal. In short, don't feel that your child can't receive wonderful care from a child care provider. There are many out there that will " love " your child dearly and will take the best of care - and will practice diligence with the DBB. Hugs to you - and know that everything will be just fine for your " day care baby " . Guest guest
I couldn't agree with you more, Holly. I certainly wouldn't consider daycare for a clubfoot baby to be an ordeal - as a matter of fact, it's been a very positive experience for my daughter, Addison. As long as the feet are properly corrected, the DBB shouldn't be an issue. Matter of fact, once she got used to the DBB, it was pretty easy, so to speak. Please don't think of your child as a special needs child - far from it! Addison is just like any other child today, except that now she wears her DBB at naptime and at night - and she doesn't know any differently. She actually knows that it's time to go to sleep when the DBB goes on, so it now makes sleeptime easier...lol Don't beat yourself up about daycare. Many kids thrive in daycare, and I'm sure your little guy will do just great! Good luck to you!
