Guest guest
Sorry if I was rambling on and on....I'm just so frustrated. I feel like I haven't let him be on his back EVER for 2 months, yet still, there wasn't much improvement....I am consumed by his head shape and tort, that's all I can think about, but it still wasn't enough....I hope I'm doing the right thing now.... > > Hi! I took my son, who is now almost 6 months, to the dr to see if he needed a helmet at 4 months. His plagio asymmetry was 12 mm and the dr said to wait 2 months. When we went today, his asymmetry was 10mm. So, I decided to go with the helmet. His head looks MUCH better to me and I was expecting his numbers to be a lot lower, but I guess I was wrong. I was preparing myself to hear the news that he needed a helmet, but I am still bummed about it. I am so nervous for so many reasons...did I make the right decision? If he was improving w/o the helmet, would he continue to improve? Will his facial assymetry improve? How will he handle the change? > > What is the Cranial Vault Asymmetry? Guest guest
Hi Jen, My son's ped also said to wait till he was 6 months to see if he needed a helmet. However, within a couple of weeks I was totally consumed by his head shape like you described yourself and decided to go through with it before 6 months. It is frustrating and will be frustrating, but if you think it is the best thing for your son, then it is. Half the battle is deciding to go forward with banding or not. I've only been part of this group for a couple of weeks, but it seems that facial asymmetry does improve and that the majority of kids adjust well to banding after a breaking in period. I would search old messages for more information. Also, look up messages about tort. It seems to be a huge factor in facial asymmetry. Your son probably would improve without the helmet...I saw a slight improvement right before banding my son. However, the reason my husband and I decided to band was because we knew that his brachy wouldn't improve enough without banding and it could even get worse. 10mm asymmetry is borderline mild-moderate. I'm not sure about cranial vault asymmetry. I think 6.8 is mild moderate if I remember correctly. And don't worry about rambling...it's good to get it out! Keep us posted. , mom to Luke, 5.1 months, severe brachy, mild left plagio 1 week 6 days in STARband New York > > > > Hi! Guest guest
You are! Sometimes repo & PT aren't enough and going forward with a band is the right choice. Starting at the age of 6 months with an asymmetry of ~10mm you will most defiantly see improvement.
