Guest guest
From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of Earthymom88 Maybe this has been discussed before but I didn't see anything on it. Why is aloe vera juice bad for scd? My dad who has crohn's swears by it and so does my sister-in-law who has ibs swears that's what helps her too. Just curious what you think? http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/aloe_vera.htm Can someone remember why Aloe Vera juice is NOT recommended for us? Deborah writes: It contains a very powerful carthartic, anthroquinone, which naturally would be extremely irritating to the gut, to say the least. Even in products with the anthroquinone removed, one doesn't know if it's completely gone, whether traces remain, what was used to remove it, etc. ************************ Lydia sends this in: Re Aloes: " ... a potent immunostimulant. ...effects noted include the enhancement of macrophage release of TUMOUR NECROSIS FACTOR.. these effects can be quite substantial " from Textbook of Natural Medicine, Murray and Pizzorno, p582. In response, Elaine writes: One of the LAST things you want with IBD! From the LI listserve And from the Legal/Illegal List: Aloe Vera Illegal It contains mucilaginous polysaccharides as well as increasing the release of tumor necrosis factor which is associated with IBD inflammation and increased immune stimulation. Guest guest
I wouldn't touch it, even in my " healed " digestive state. I have concerns about distilling it, extracting some components, then reassembling it. And I would want to do some research into whether breaking apart mucopolysaccharide chains actually transforms the sugars/carbs into a monosaccharide state or just lessens the chain length which means our digestions still can't break it down. And since I'm not a biochemist, and don't have the lab equipment to run tests.... It all sounds very iff-y to me, and not something I'd want to attempt. I would ask my doctor to really give me a detailed explanation of why he thinks it will help. I do that all the time when my doctors recommend something. And even then I'd say no, having learned a lot about polysaccharides and digestion over the past six years. But that's me. If you do decide to try it, just start with a tiny amount, and be super cautious and super vigilant about any reactions. Stop taking it if you notice a reaction. Kim M. Then they recommend stuff which is SCD-legal. And don't understand that SCD requires fanatical adherence. Aloe vera just isn't legal. No matter what they've done to it. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Thanks Marilynn. I quit using it. This is the same doc who put me on SCD and then told me to start using Ultra Flora IB which contains bifi. So confusing.
