My daughter had both plagio (8mm) and brachy (98.2%) when she got her first DOC band at 9.5 months. When I had her scanned about two months later, her plagio was down to 2.1mm and her brachy had improved by 5%. She is in a second DOC band now and will get another scan of her head on April 8th (which will be about 3 months from the last one). I can tell you already that she is looking so much better to me and she is an older baby.

To be honest with you, I can't wait to look at those numbers to confirm what I am noticing and be done with this helmet/band treatment. She is now 13.5 months old and has been in a helmet since she was 5.5 months old.

So to answer you question, Maysa's first band did take care of her plagio first, but maybe that's because her plagio was mild to begin with. It did also take care of her brachy quite a bit. However, the second band she is now in is made to only correct that, her brachy.

How old is your son?

Robin,We've been in a Starband for 8 weeks and have seen no real improvement in the CI---it went from 91% to 90.4%, and this is from a manual measurement, not a scanner, so it might not even be accurate.I am also hoping to get down to the low 80's and hoping that someone on this board can give an idea of how long that will take!I'm wondering if maybe first the helmet corrects the asymmetry and then it is adjusted so as to push toward more growth overall in the back. That would make sense to me. Hopefully at our next appointment next week we're going to start to see some improvement in the CI.Good luck to you too! Your numbers are not bad now, of course! No one would band a child who started with those numbers!>> Our son has been

in his Hanger band for 6 weeks on 3/4. His cranial vault has improved to 4mm (3%). But his Cephalic ratio is still 87% (down from 90.5%). It did not change in the last 2 weeks. Our orthotist said she would like it to be between 80-83%. This seems like so far away. We have another appt in 2 weeks, I hope it improves some by then. He looks great and we are happy with our results. Anyone else have a Cephalic index that was slow to increase?> Thanks,> Robin > SW Ohio>

It does look different. I posted some pictures on her blog a few weeks back at http://mymaysa.wordpress.com/2009/02/08/maysa-in-doc-band-2/ I like the look of the plagio band better than that of the brachy band. Also, the brachy band comes down her eyebrows a little too low that I always have to lift it up, especially after an adjustment. However, the brachy band is so much rounder in the back and that's what I am focusing on right now...

Hey Leila-Out of curiosity, does Maysa's second band look different than her first? I don't think I've seen a recent photo of her and was just wondering if the shape is different because it was made only to correct her brachy. I am confused. Are there different bands for different issues. My son is in a NOPCO Boston Band. It is cut out in the areas where we want growth. Should he have a different type of bandMissy, Mom to Zev.

My son has brachy and his band just looks like a normal doc band. Did he not get one designed for brachy?Sent via BlackBerry from T-MobileFrom: "" Date: Thu, 05 Mar 2009 00:28:26 -0000<Plagiocephaly >Subject: Re: Cephalic index/ratio slow to improve I agree, I don't love the look of the brachy band, but as long as it's doing it's job, that's all that matters. She's still adorable though! And you have all that great space for her ponytail! Jake 2.5 (DOCBand Grad 9/08) Jordan-5 > > > > > > Our son has been in his Hanger band for 6 weeks on 3/4. Oooh. Gotcha. Like if my son gets a second it might look different the second time. He actually did have a bit of plagio so I gotcha! Made perfect sense thanks!Sent via BlackBerry from T-MobileFrom: "" Date: Thu, 05 Mar 2009 01:15:11 -0000<Plagiocephaly >Subject: Re: Cephalic index/ratio slow to improve No, some brachy bands also look like plagio bands, it just depends on the shape of the head to begin with and the severity. Every DOCBand is made to fit each baby specifically. I would say that a plagio baby would not be able to wear the band that Maysa is in right now though, because it's not designed to hold a bossed forehead in place (because there is no cap in front to hold it in place). Whereas a plagio-looking band (the kind with the caps) could also treat a brachy baby because it would still fit snug in the forehead and sides, just with more coverage. Also, there is the issue that most of the time, they're trying to correct brachy and plagio (even the mildest of asym) at the same time in one band. So the band can look more like a plagio band, but be treating the brachy simultaneously. With Maysa, they knew they had corrected her plagio and were making a second band to treat her brachy, so it was made to do exactly that. Please don't let me confuse anyone. There is no one way a DOCBand should look for brachy. Generally speaking, a plagio baby could not wear a brachy-looking band, but a brachy baby could wear a plagio-looking band. But each DOCBand is custom designed, so there should be no doubt that yours (or anyone's) was made exactly the way it should have been made.
