OK, here's my question, problem, etc. 5 weeks ago I joined the Y and have

been going 3 times a week and doing cardio, water aerobics and yoga/pilates.

I'm about to add weights to my program. I also do Winsor pilates at home.

I have gained about 3-4 lbs. and have not seen any change in the way my

clothes fit. Yet. I know that this is fairly normal, that muscle weighs more

than fat, but I would like to know just how long does it take to notice a

difference!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I'm gettin' stronger and feelin' more fit, but I want to SEE some

improvement in the mirror and in my clothes and on the scale!! I went from

being inactive to rarely sitting down. I drink my protein and take my vits

and stay away from carbs. I'm doing all the right things but my body is

refusing to give anything up.

I've got about 15 lbs. to goal and would really like to get there. Am I

starting to freak out over nothing here? I guess I would just like to hear

what experiences you had when starting your programs. (those that have them)

Was this normal for you, too?

Thanks for any input!

Hey Carol,

Your fitness regimen sounds a lot like mine. I'm 2 years post op and

really started working out at 4 months out. I don't do water (too much

flappage to be bathing suit worthy) but I run 3-4 days a week lift 2-3

days a week and also do Winsor pilates at home... I think secretly a lot

of us who were MO have a tendency to build muscle long before the fat

comes off, and this is a good thing. The more fit you are, the higher

your metabolism and the better fat burner your body is.

Weightlifting will absolutely help you get that last 15 off, there's

nothing better for shaping your body and revving up the metabolism than

weightlifting in my opinion!

Just keep one thing in mind... One lb of fat compares in volume to one

baloney sandwich on Wonder bread. Think about how many baloney

sandwiches you have on you and think about how many you really think you

need to lose *grin*

From my experience and training, it takes the body about 6 weeks to

really show change (even just being able to do more counts as change!).

With everything you are doing, I believe you will definitely be

successful! Also keep in mind that our bodies are reaaaaally good at

adapting to exercise, so consider switching up your routine at least

every 8 weeks. From water aerobics to cycling, or something along those

lines. Shock your system once in a while! I've had to do that a few

times, and it really does work.

Take it easy on yourself, and enjoy the journey. Whip out that

measuring tape once a month and see what it has to say instead of

relying on the scale too much :) (yeah yeah, I'm really TRYING to take

my own advice, I swear!)
