Clear liquid diet?? How long?

I recently read that after surgery you can only drink clear liquids

for a while ~ could someone tell me how long this is for? And does

this only include water and juice? I am a vegetarian so I doubt I

will be able to have any of the broth at the hospital ~ is watered

down tomato soup okay? I was wondering b/c I have to drive down to

Halifax for this surgery which is about 7 hrs away and I will be in

the hospital for 3 days. At first I thought I would bring Boost

with me etc. but not if I will be on a clear diet until I go back

home.

PS ~ also, do they GIVE you a syringe or do you have to buy one

yourself afterwards? Do they give you anything else normally?
